FAST observations of discrete electrostatic waves in association with down-going ion beams in the auroral zone
Cynthia A Cattell,L. Johnson,R. Bergmann,David Klumpar,C. W. Carlson,J. P. McFadden,Robert J. Strangeway,Robert E. Ergun,K. Sigsbee,Robert F. Pfaff +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, the first observations of down-flowing ions and associated waves outside of the cusp were made, and the physical mechanism producing the ions is very different from the one associated with cusp ion injections.

Decay of ion beam driven acoustic waves into ion holes
TL;DR: In this paper, the formation of ion holes and parallel potential structures in a background plasma driven by an ion beam was demonstrated using particle simulation, and it was shown that if such a background is present ion holes form in the background ion distribution and travel at the acoustic speed in the direction of the ion beam velocity.

Simulation study of ion two-stream instability in the auroral acceleration region
TL;DR: In this article, the effect of the ion two-stream instability on hydrogen and oxygen distributions at small relative drifts was investigated and it was found that the oblique modes contribute significantly to heating.

Effects of ion two-stream instability on auroral ion heating
TL;DR: The ion two-stream instability develops between upflowing H(+) and O(+) in the auroral acceleration region, if the two species are accelerated to different velocities in a semistationary electrostatic potential as mentioned in this paper.

Comparison of Solitary Waves and Wave Packets Observed at Plasma Sheet Boundary to Results from the Auroral Zone
Cynthia A Cattell,J. Dombeck,A. Keiling,John Wygant,R. Bergmann,Mary K. Hudson,Craig Kletzing,F. S. Mozer,M. Temerin,Ilan Roth,George K. Parks +10 more
TL;DR: Cattell et al. as discussed by the authors discussed electric and magnetic fields observations of waves occurring at two very different time scales, and found that the high altitude events are associated with a wide variety of electron distribution types, whereas the low altitude events occur in regions of flat-top electron beam distributions.
