A PLC device may include a delayed correlation detector and a cross-correlation detector operating in concert to facilitate preamble detection in one implementation.

In an embodiment, the method further includes calculating a confidence metric for the coarse frequency error estimate; when the confidence metric exceeds a threshold value, determining the frequency adjustment based on the candidate fine frequency error estimate; otherwise, determining the frequency adjustment based on a fine frequency error estimate in the plurality of fine frequency error estimates closest to a most recent previous fine frequency error estimate.

A method for performing mobile communications may include comparing a received digitized signal with a local reference synchronization sequence to generate a plurality of candidate timing estimates. Each of the plurality of candidate timing estimates may represent an estimated temporal location of a synchronization sequence in the received digitized signal. The method may further include demodulating the received digitized signal according to each of the plurality of candidate timing estimates to produce a plurality of reliability metrics, wherein each of the plurality of reliability metrics may be associated with one of the plurality of candidate timing estimates. The method may additionally include selecting one of the plurality of candidate timing estimates as a selected timing estimate based on a comparison between one or more of the plurality of reliability metrics and performing synchronized mobile communications using the selected timing estimate and a frequency offset value associated with the selected timing estimate.

Embodiments of the present invention provide for frequency synchronization using a technique for estimating CFO using a constant bias induced with respect to the received signal by CFO. Additionally or alternatively, embodiments of the present invention provide for frequency synchronization using a technique for estimating CFO using phase rotation caused by CFO. The time synchronization and frequency synchronization of embodiments may be performed independently, without requiring the results of one synchronization operation for performing the other synchronization operation.

A method of estimating an integer frequency offset and compensating for the integer frequency offset by an estimated error is provided. A frequency offset estimation method may include receiving a reception signal including PLC data and a physical layer link channel (PLC) preamble, detecting first position information on a position of a subcarrier of the PLC preamble in a frequency axis from the reception signal through a cross-correlation between the PLC preamble and the reception signal, detecting second position information on the position of the subcarrier of the PLC preamble defined in a transmission end by restoring the PLC data, and calculating a frequency offset by comparing the first position information with the second position information.

Systems, methods, and other embodiments associated with preamble detection based on repeated preamble codes are described. According to one embodiment, an apparatus is provided that wirelessly receives a signal and calculates a differential output corresponding to a multiplication of the signal and a delayed version of the signal. A cross correlation is performed between the differential output and a known preamble pattern to produce a cross correlation output. A moving average calculation is performed on the cross correlation output to produce an average cross correlation. One or more peaks are detected in the average cross correlation when the average cross correlation has an amplitude greater than a threshold. When the one or more detected peaks meets predetermined criteria, the apparatus provides information about at least one of the detected peaks for subsequent signal processing.
