Platelets induce neutrophil extracellular traps in transfusion-related acute lung injury
Axelle Caudrillier,Kai Kessenbrock,Brian M. Gilliss,John X. Nguyen,Marisa B. Marques,Marc Monestier,Pearl Toy,Zena Werb,Mark R. Looney +8 more
TL;DR: It is reported that activated platelets induce the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI), which is the leading cause of death after transfusion therapy.
Transfusion-related acute lung injury : Definition and review
Pearl Toy,Mark A. Popovsky,Edward Abraham,Daniel R. Ambruso,Leslie G. Holness,Patricia M. Kopko,Janice G. McFarland,Avery B. Nathens,Christopher C. Silliman,David F. Stroncek +9 more
TL;DR: Clinicians can diagnose and report TRALI cases to the blood bank and researchers can use this definition to determine incidence, pathophysiology, and strategies to prevent this leading cause of transfusion-associated mortality.

Human cardiovascular and metabolic response to acute, severe isovolemic anemia.
Richard B. Weiskopf,Maurene K. Viele,John Feiner,Scott D. Kelley,Jeremy A. Lieberman,Mariam Noorani,Jacqueline M. Leung,Dennis M. Fisher,William R. Murray,Pearl Toy,Mark A. Moore +10 more
TL;DR: Analysis of Holter readings suggests that at this Hb concentration in this resting healthy population, myocardial ischemia would occur infrequently, and does not produce evidence of inadequate systemic TO2, as assessed by lack of change of O2 and plasma lactate concentration.

The variability of transfusion practice in coronary artery bypass surgery. Transfusion Medicine Academic Award Group.
TL;DR: It is concluded that blood component usage for coronary artery bypass grafts differs widely among institutions, and the variability in use of these components is accounted for in part by unnecessary transfusions in otherwise routine, uncomplicated coronary arteries bypass graft procedures.
