Pd-loaded In2O3 nanowire (NW)-like networks were synthesized via electroless plating using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as templates, followed by oxidation and removal of the CNTs at 550 °C. Palladium (Pd) was introduced to activate the surface of the CNTs for subsequent plating. Before calcination, Pd was loaded onto In2O3. The as-synthesized Pd-loaded In2O3 replicated the structure of the CNTs, forming a porous NW-like network with a very large specific surface area. Furthermore, the NO2 gas sensing properties of the Pd-loaded In2O3 NW-like network, porous Pd–In2O3 and porous unloaded-In2O3 were investigated. The results demonstrated that the Pd–In2O3 NW-like network exhibits superior sensitivity with short response and recovery times, and demonstrates a significant response when exposed to NO2 at concentrations as low as 5 ppm at a temperature of 110 °C. A synergy of electric and chemical effects has been proposed to explain the gas sensing enhancement.

Pd-loaded In2O3 nanowire-like network synthesized using carbon nanotube templates for enhancing NO2 sensing performance

Pd0.5Pd3O4 nanoparticle loaded ZnO hierarchical architectures have been successfully synthesized via a facile solution route at room temperature followed by a subsequent thermal treatment. Morphology and component characterizations reveal that Pd0.5Pd3O4 nanoparticles are uniformly deposited on the surface of the ZnO hierarchical architecture. A gas sensor based on the as-prepared Pd0.5Pd3O4 loaded ZnO hierarchical architecture shows excellent gas sensing performances in terms of fast response time (1 s), recovery time (5 s) and a high sensitivity for 50 ppm methanol at a relatively low temperature, which are evidently modified by the appropriate decoration of Pd0.5Pd3O4 nanoparticles in comparison with pure ZnO. The enhanced gas sensing performances are attributed to the appropriate sensitization effect of Pd0.5Pd3O4 nanoparticles. A multistage reaction formation mechanism of such flowerlike hierarchical architecture, and the morphology-dependent gas sensing mechanism are proposed.

Highly enhanced methanol gas sensing properties by Pd0.5Pd3O4 nanoparticle loaded ZnO hierarchical structures

An endless use of harmful chemicals in various industries and the discharge of untreated water from these industries into the water resources has caused severe deterioration and contamination of the aquatic environment. Consequently, the water bodies are severely degraded worldwide in terms of water quality and quantity. This has also perturbed the sensitive cycles of the ecosystem, thus making it a global problem which requires immediate attention. In this regard, metal oxide nanosponges have proved to be excellent candidates for the purpose of water treatment and remediation. Various remarkable qualities like high surface area, robustness, facile functionalization, cost-effectiveness, high porosity, recyclability and reusability, simple synthesis and high chemical stability make nanosponges the choice of material over other nanomaterials. Herein, types of metal oxide nanosponges and various synthesis routes for fabricating different types of metal oxide nanosponges have been discussed. Furthermore, their application for removing harmful chemical compounds from water has also been outlined in detail. The action mechanism and effect of various external factors which impact the action of metal oxide nanosponges like pH, temperature, contact time, and underlying thermodynamic factors have also been discussed. The future scope and challenges in this field with respect to water treatment have also been outlined. 

Synthesis and Application of Types of Metal Oxide Nanosponges in Water Treatment

Spinel oxide nanoparticles (NPs) of MnCo2O4 (MCO) and silver-doped MCO were synthesized using the combustion method. The prepared NPs were characterized via x-ray diffraction (XRD) to determine the crystalline structures. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were applied to demonstrate the morphology, shape, and size of the achieved NPs. In addition, the effect of Ag (10%) as conductor and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as surfactant on the prepared materials was investigated. The XRD results show that Ag doping of MnCo2O4 does not change the crystal structure. According to the SEM studies, the addition of SDS prevented NP agglomeration according. The synthesized nanomaterials could be used for supercapacitor application with superior performances. Among the all prepared nanomaterials, the Ag-doped MnCo2O4 NPs prepared in the presence of SDS exhibited the best pseudo-capacitive performance possessing the highest specific capacitances of 942 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 and 590 F g−1 at 20 A g−1 with excellent cycling stability (93.7% retention rate after 1000 cycles).

The Combustion Synthesis of Ag-Doped MnCo 2 O 4 Nanoparticles for Supercapacitor Applications

Addition of noble metals has been shown to enhance the properties of TiO2 for a wide range of applications. Methods to incorporate Pt into TiO2 usually involve the use of chloride-containing precursors. Here we present an alternative chloride-free method to incorporate Pt through aqueous oxidation of multilayered Ti/Pt/Ti films in a simple manner. In this contribution, we demonstrate this route using sputtered Ti/Pt/Ti films either in blanket layer or micrometer scale features patterned using lithography. A mechanism for Pt incorporation into TiO2 based on formation of Pt hydroxides is proposed. We demonstrate the utility of this technique to incorporate Pt into TiO2 nanosponges by constructing prototype sensors which exhibit a faster response time and a current increase of 2 orders of magnitude larger than sensors using pristine TiO2 nanosponges. This method is a simple route to integrate Pt-modified TiO2 (Pt-TiO2) nanosponge features into devices such as lab on a chip and integrated power sources.
