SmartMonitor: using smart devices to perform structural health monitoring
Dimitrios Kotsakos,Panos Sakkos,Vana Kalogeraki,Dimitirios Gunopulos +3 more
- 01 Aug 2013
TL;DR: A scalable, fault-tolerant communication protocol is described, that performs best-effort time synchronization of the nodes and is used to implement a decentralized version of the popular peak-picking SHM method.

Elastic Processing of Analytical Query Workloads on IaaS Clouds
TL;DR: An engine for analytical query processing and a suite of specialized techniques that collectively take advantage of the tree form of such plans are developed, which are very efficient, elastic, and profitable.

Language agnostic meme-filtering for hashtag-based social network analysis
TL;DR: It is argued that hashtags that are correlated with memes may hinder many valuable social media algorithms like trend detection and event identification, and a set of language-agnostic features are proposed that aid the separation of these two classes: meme- Hashtags and event-hashtags.

Dimitrios Kotsakos,Panos Sakkos,Vana Kalogeraki,Dimitrios Gunopulos +3 more
- 29 May 2013
TL;DR: A generic distributed framework consisting only of mobile smart devices and operating only in the network is presented, that performs best-effort time synchronization of the nodes and presents a first approach in an example application of distributed structural health monitoring (SHM).
