Goat meat quality
E.C. Webb,N.H. Casey,L. Simela +2 more
TL;DR: Goat meat has been established as lean meat with favourable nutritional quality, and its attributes are concordant with present day consumer demands for leaner and nutritious meat, and hence should be the basis for promoting the meat.

The boer goat. I. Origin, adaptability, performance testing, reproduction and milk production
N.H. Casey,W.A. van Niekerk +1 more
TL;DR: The future of Boer goats lies in performance testing for economically important traits, and performance testing aims to measure dam's characteristics pre- and post-weaning, feed efficiency of kids under standardized conditions, and qualitative and quantitative carcass evaluation of sire's progeny.

Managing goat production for meat quality
N.H. Casey,E.C. Webb +1 more
TL;DR: Genetic and physiological factors that influence the production of goat meat are considered, being wholesome, nutritious and palatable.

An evaluation of the use of blood metabolite concentrations as indicators of nutritional status in free-ranging indigenous goats.
TL;DR: It was concluded that the plasma concentrations of all the blood metabolites studied were sensitive to seasonal changes in nutrient supply, and that they could be of use as a management tool in free-ranging farming systems in which conventional methods of nutritional assessment are difficult to apply.
Physiological limits to growth and the related effects on meat quality
E.C. Webb,N.H. Casey +1 more
TL;DR: The challenge in livestock production should shift towards synchronising the best genotypes in a specific environment with the most appropriate and environmentally acceptable technologies available to produce consistently high quality meat as discussed by the authors.
