Graphics processors Unit (GPU) architectures are becoming increasingly programmable, offering the potential for dramatic speedups for a variety of general purpose applications compared to contemporary general- purpose processors (CPUs). However, there are several optimization techniques which are used to maximize the benefit of the GPU resources. This research exploits optimization techniques for CUDA enabled GPU architecture in order to achieve the best possible performance for Berlekamp-Massey Algorithm (BMA) as a case study. Berlekamp-Massey Algorithm (BMA) is one of the best solutions to find the shortest linear feedback shift register which is very important for several applications such as digital processing and cryptography. The experimental results show that the optimized BMA implementation is almost 160 × faster than non-bit CPU serial implementation, 7 × faster than bit serial implementation and 4 × faster than an initial parallel bit implementation.

Exploring the parallel capabilities of GPU: Berlekamp-Massey algorithm case study

A soft-decision Reed-Solomon(RS) decoding algorithm is introduced. Chase algorithm is employed and an improved Chase algorithm is presented. Hard-decision and soft-decision decoding are tested under Additive White Gaussian Noise(AWGN) channel using BPSK. Simulation results show that larger coding gain is obtained by using soft-decision decoding and the tradeoff between error performance and decoding complexity using improved Chase algorithm is provided. Finally, DSP implementation scheme of soft-decision RS decoder in Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum(DSSS) systems is proposed.

Soft-Decision RS Decoding Algorithm and Its DSP Implementation in DSSS Systems

In this paper we present a novel implementation of the JPWL standard on a DSP device, targeted to the protection of HD video streams at 50 Mbit/s. Several investigations on computational cost have been carried out in order to find the parts that had to be optimized for DSP. The result is an implementation that uses tailored instructions for operation on Galois Field and Enhanced Direct Memory Access (EDMA) for interleaving.

A real-time, DSP-based JPWL implementation for wireless High Definition video transmission

Reed-Solomon (RS) codes are error-correcting codes used in many of today's communication systems RS encoding and decoding are typically implemented using dedicated hardware elements used in ADSL modems and digital TV In this paper we propose using software in lieu of a hardware-based RS de-coder This is accomplished using the Berlekamp-Massey algorithm, implemented on a programmable DSP This software-based RS decoder using Berlekamp-Massey is implemented on Motorola's MSC8101 StarCore DSP In order to evaluate the algorithm we use the following criteria: computation cost; cycle count, critical paths in the decoding scheme, and error location in the codeword Furthermore, we examine the effect of changing the RS code's k, t parameters and its primitive polynomial in real-time implementation The Berlekamp-Massey algorithm operates over finite field arithmetic, whose steps, as applied on the StarCore DSP, are discussed in detail and specifically evaluated using the assembly code for the syndrome search We conclude that the Berlekamp-Massey algorithm, used for RS decoding, should be implemented using long codewords
