The counter tamper component can be associated with a memory module that includes a memory device(s) module and is contained in an electronic device and the memory module can change a color state to provide evidence of tampering. A window component is positioned on the casing of the electronic device so that the memory module is visible to the user so the user can perceive that a tamper attack associated with the module has occurred.

The present invention provides a method for conducting a transaction that includes receiving a pseudo account identifier that corresponds to a primary account identifier. The pseudo account identifier may be received at a portable wireless device and may be generated by a remote server computer. The portable wireless device can receive the pseudo account identifier over a first network and provide the pseudo account identifier to an access device. The access devices generally comprises a reader that can receive the pseudo account identifier, and thereafter send a message to request authorization of a transaction. The authorization request message may include the pseudo account identifier and is sent to a payment processing network. The authorization request message is sent to the payment processing network over a second network. The payment processing network may then process the authorization message and return a response that indicates if the transaction is authorized or not.

A hybrid disk drive, i.e., a disk drive with two types of permanent storage media (conventional disk media and nonvolatile memory, such as flash memory), uses its nonvolatile memory in operational modes other than the power-save or "standby" mode wherein the disks are spun down. In a first additional mode, called a "performance" mode, one or more blocks of write data are destaged from volatile memory (the disk drive's write cache) and written to the disk and simultaneously one or more data blocks of write data are destaged from the volatile memory and written to the nonvolatile memory. In a second additional mode, called a "harsh-environment" mode, the disk drive includes one or more environmental sensors, such as temperature and humidity sensors, and the nonvolatile memory temporarily replaces the disks as the permanent storage media. In a third additional mode, called a "write-inhibit" mode, the disk drive includes one or more write-inhibit detectors, such as a shock sensor for detecting disturbances and vibrations to the disk drive. In write-inhibit mode, if the write-inhibit signal is on then the write data is written from the volatile memory to the nonvolatile memory instead of to the disks.

An agent computer system, acting on behalf of the user, provides the personal information to various wide area network sites for conducting online transactions. A user has a secure device with a built-in device identifier. A backup center has a computer system to be coupled to the secure device during backup of the personal information. The personal information is encrypted with a unique user ID as a key. The user ID is entered by the user. The user ID is irreversibly encrypted to a unique irreversibly encrypted user identifier. The secure device includes data executable to establish a new account, renew an old account, and transmission of the encrypted information along with the unique device identifier and the unique irreversibly encrypted user identifier to the backup center. The unique device identifier and the unique irreversibly encrypted user identifier are used for indexing the storage of the encrypted information.

A storage device includes a tamper-resistant module and a flash memory. In correspondence with a command, a CPU inside the tamper-resistant module judges the security of data received from the outside, then recording the data as follows: High-security and small-capacity data is recorded into a memory inside the tamper-resistant module. High-security and large-capacity data is encrypted, then being recorded into the flash memory. Low-security data is recorded as it is into the flash memory. This recording method permits large-capacity data to be stored while ensuring a security (i.e., a security level) corresponding thereto.
