SOLUTION: The variable-wavelength laser light source includes: a variable-wavelength resonator 1 which has a first input port, a second input port, and an output port, and can shift a wavelength spectrum peak of an intensity of transmitted light; a first semiconductor optical amplifier 11 one end of which is optically connected to the first input port of the variable-wavelength resonator 1; a second semiconductor optical amplifier 12 one end of which is optically connected to the second input port of the variable-wavelength resonator 1 and which has a different gain wavelength spectrum from the first semiconductor optical amplifier 11; and a dielectric multilayer film 18 which is formed on the end surface of the output port of the variable-wavelength resonator 1 and has a predetermined transmission factor and reflection factor. Disclosed is a wavelength-variable laser light source, wherein the wavelength-variable range is expanded with a relatively simple configuration. A method for driving such wavelength-variable laser light source is also provided. The wavelength-variable laser light source is provided with: a wavelength-variable resonator (1), which has a first input port, a second input port and an output port, and can move the wavelength spectral peak of the transmitting light intensity; a first semiconductor optical amplifier (11) having one end thereof optically connected to the first input port of the wavelength-variable resonator (1); a second semiconductor optical amplifier (12), which has one end thereof optically connected to the second input port of the wavelength-variable resonator (1) and has a gain wavelength spectrum different from that of the first semiconductor optical amplifier (11); and a dielectric multilayer film (18) which is provided on the end surface of the output port of the wavelength-variable resonator (1) and has predetermined reflection ratio and transmissivity.

Wavelength-variable laser light source and method for driving same

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external resonator type semiconductor laser device having an extremely wide wavelength variable width. SOLUTION: On a gain chip 10, a plurality of striped active layers 11a and 11b of mutually different band gap energies are formed at an interval from each other from a rear end face 10b to an emission end face 10a. Light emitted from the emission end face 10a of the gain chip 10 is made incident on a diffraction grating 3 through a collimating lens 2. The diffracted light of a prescribed wavelength among the diffracted light diffracted by the diffraction grating 3 is reflected by an optical feedback mirror 4, fed back to the active layer 11a or 11b which generated the light, and reflected on the rear end face 10b. Wavelength variation by the rotational drive of the optical feedback mirror 4 is achieved for each of the laser beams L 1 and L 2 of different wavelengths. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external resonator-type wavelength variable optical source where a wavelength variable range can be enlarged, an optical axis can easily be adjusted, and miniaturization is possible. SOLUTION: In the external resonator-type wavelength variable optical source, a wavelength is changed by an optical amplifier and a wavelength selection/reflection means arranged outside the optical amplifier. The optical source is provided with first and second optical amplifiers in which non-reflection films are given to one outgoing end and which are different in wavelength ranges; first and second optical waveguides on which outgoing light from one outgoing ends where the non-reflection films of the first and second optical amplifiers are given are made incident; a third optical waveguide connecting light transmitted through the first and second optical waveguides by branching and synthesizing regions; a lens making outgoing light from one outgoing end where the non-reflection film of the third optical waveguide is given parallel; the wavelength selection/reflection means on which outgoing light from the lens is made incident, and in which reflected light is made incident on one outgoing end to which the non-reflection film of the third optical waveguide is given through the lens; and an optical fiber where outgoing light from the other outgoing end, to which the non-reflection film of the third optical waveguide is given is made incident on one end and outgoing light is outputted from the other end.
