Mathematical models are utilized to approximate various highly complex engineering, physical, environmental, social, and economic phenomena. Model parameters exerting the most influence on model results are identified through a ‘sensitivity analysis’. A comprehensive review is presented of more than a dozen sensitivity analysis methods. This review is intended for those not intimately familiar with statistics or the techniques utilized for sensitivity analysis of computer models. The most fundamental of sensitivity techniques utilizes partial differentiation whereas the simplest approach requires varying parameter values one-at-a-time. Correlation analysis is used to determine relationships between independent and dependent variables. Regression analysis provides the most comprehensive sensitivity measure and is commonly utilized to build response surfaces that approximate complex models.

Current experimental and theoretical progress toward the goal of controlling quantum dynamics is summarized. Two key developments have now revitalized the field. First, appropriate ultrafast laser pulse shaping capabilities have only recently become practical. Second, the introduction of engineering control concepts has put the required theoretical framework on a rigorous foundation. Extrapolations to determine what is realistically possible are presented.

Coherent control of quantum dynamics: the dream is alive.

Quantum control is concerned with active manipulation of physical and chemical processes on the atomic and molecular scale. This work presents a perspective of progress in the field of control over quantum phenomena, tracing the evolution of theoretical concepts and experimental methods from early developments to the most recent advances. Among numerous theoretical insights and technological improvements that produced the present state-of- the-art in quantum control, there have been several breakthroughs of foremost importance. On the technology side, the current experimental successes would be impossible without the development of intense femtosecond laser sources and pulse shapers. On the theory side, the two most critical insights were (i) realizing that ultrafast atomic and molecular dynamics can be controlled via manipulation of quantum interferences and (ii) understanding that optimally shaped ultrafast laser pulses are the most effective means for producing the desired quantum interference patterns in the controlled system. Finally, these theoretical and experimental advances were brought together by the crucial concept of adaptive feedback control (AFC), which is a laboratory procedure employing measurement-driven, closed-loop optimization to identify the best shapes of femtosecond laser control pulses for steering quantum dynamics towards the desired objective. Optimization in AFC experiments is guided by a learning algorithm, with stochastic methods proving to be especially effective. AFC of quantum phenomena has found numerous applications in many areas of the physical and chemical sciences, and this paper reviews the extensive experiments. Control of quantum phenomena: past, present and future

This paper is the second in a series of two. The first paper has been devoted to the detailed explanation of the mathematical formulation of the underlying theoretical framework. Specifically, the first paper shows that it is possible to construct an infinite linear ODE set, which describes a probabilistic evolution. The evolution is probabilistic because the unknowns are expectations, with appropriate initial conditions. These equations, which we name, Probabilistic Evolution Equations (PEE) are linear at the level of ODEs and initial conditions. In this paper, we first focus on the phenomenological reasoning that lead us to the derivation of PEE. Second, the aspects of the PEE construction is revisited with a focus on the spectral nature of the probabilistic evolution. Finally, we postulate fruitful avenues of research in the fields of dynamical causal modeling in human neuroimaging and effective connectivity analysis. We believe that this final section is a prime example of how the rigorous methods developed in the context of mathematical chemistry can be influential in other fields and disciplines.

In this work, a new rational approximation scheme, based on the recently developed Transformational High Dimensional Model Representation (THDMR) approximation method is developed. As an initial step to the construction of a rational approximation for multivariate functions via THDMR, this paper focuses on the general theoretical background of the method and gives explicit formulae for the computation of such approximants. The performance of the technique is shown by several examples both in univariate and bivariate cases.

A new rational approximation technique based on transformational high dimensional model representation

This is the third and therefore the final part of a trilogy on probabilistic evolution approach. The work presented here focuses on the probabilistic evolution determination for the state variables of a many particle system from classical mechanical point of view. Probabilistic evolution involves the expected value evolutions for all natural number Kronecker powers of the state variables, positions and momenta. We use the phase space distribution of the Liouville equation perspective to construct the expected values of the state variables’ Kronecker powers to define unknown temporal functions. The infinite number homogeneous linear ODEs with an infinite constant coefficient matrix are constructed by following the same steps as in the previous two works on quantum mechanics. The only difference is in the definitions of the expected values here. We also focus on a system of many harmonic oscillators to illustrate the block triangularity.
