A hydraulic shock absorber (10) comprising an inner housing portion (12) slidably coupled to an outer housing portion (14) to define a variable size chamber for containing shock absorber fluid. The region where the inner and outer housing portions overlap defines an annulus (A) between adjacent surfaces of the inner and outer housing portions which varies in size in accordance with the extension state of the shock absorber. A dynamic seal (24) is coupled to a surface of the shock absorber within the annulus for confining shock absorber fluid to the chamber. The shock absorber fluid is an electro-rheological or magneto-rheological fluid and the shock absorber includes a device (28) for generating a magnetic or electric control field within the chamber at a region (R) adjacent to the dynamic seal in order to increase the viscosity of the shock absorber fluid adjacent to the dynamic seal to inhibit passage of the shock absorber fluid beyond the dynamic seal.

The invention discloses an oil well drilling damping device which comprises a work cylinder and a piston rod. The tail end of the piston rod is in threaded connection with a piston, the longitudinal section of the piston is in a T shape, two semicircular blocking plates are hinged to the tail end of the vertical portion of the piston, a plurality of upper leakage flow holes are formed in the horizontal portion of the piston, a plurality of lower leakage flow holes corresponding to the upper leakage flow holes are formed in the two blocking plates, the hole diameters of the upper leakage flow holes gradually increase from middle to two ends, and a coil assembly is arranged in the middle of the piston. When the oil well drilling damping device is used, the hole diameters of the leakage flow holes gradually increase from middle to two ends, a middle contraction opening of the leakage flow holes is achieved, and the grasp force, at the upper end and the lower end of the middle contraction opening, of magnetorheological fluid to the piston is enhanced. Meanwhile, the piston is started up and shut down in the work cylinder through quick conversion of external voltage. Due to the fact that no throttle valve with the variable throttle size is arranged in the oil well drilling damping device, the mechanical abrasion resistance of the oil well drilling damping device is greatly improved, and the service life of the oil well drilling damping device is prolonged.

A controllable magneto-rheological device includes an annular cylinder formed by inner and outer walls connected at first and second opposing ends and forming an inner shaft configured to receive an operational component of an engine, generator or other device including one or more rotating structures. A magneto-rheological fluid is provided to fill a volume between the inner and outer walls of the annular cylinder. A plurality of electro-magnetic coils are positioned around the outer wall of the annular cylinder. One or more current controllers are coupled to the plurality of electro-magnetic coils for introducing a current through each of the electro-magnetic coils and corresponding magnetic flux through the magneto-rheological fluid. The self-sensing separation type double-cylinder magnetorheological damper comprises a first piston cylinder and a second piston cylinder which are mutually angled and arranged in a communicating mode; the first piston cylinder comprises a piston inner cylinder and a piston outer cylinder which are coaxially arranged, and magnetorheological fluid circulation channels are formed in the piston inner cylinder, the piston outer cylinder and the second piston cylinder; the piston inner cylinder is provided with a piston rod assembly capable of reciprocating in the axial direction of the piston inner cylinder, and the piston rod assembly compresses and restores the magnetorheological fluid to correspondingly form a first circulation loop and a second circulation loop; and a magnetorheological fluid regulating mechanism used for forming the first circulation loop and the second circulation loop is arranged in the second piston cylinder. According to the self-sensing separation type double-cylinder magnetorheological damper, independent control of damping force values under compression and restoration working conditions is achieved through circulating flow between the inner and outer channels of the magnetorheological fluid; and the device can detect relative displacement and relative speed of the piston rod and the piston outer cylinder of the magnetorheological damper through a self-sensing LVDT structure design away from a magnetorheological coil, and provides a basis for adjustingthe damping force of the damper.

The first chamber is in communication with a second chamber, through a magnetorheological valve assembly which comprises of a plurality of cylindrically shaped fluid passageways extending from the first chamber to the second chamber, and an electromagnet; and a power supply in electrical communication with the electromagnet.
