A spindle 51 capable of controlling quantitatively the rotational angle around the center axial line itself is mounted with a turning tool 50; the spindle 51 and a workpiece are allowed to be relatively dislocated by an axial control along at least a plane perpendicular to the rotation axial line of the spindle 51 in such a manner that the relative movement locus L of the spindle center Cs to the workpiece conforms to a geometry to be machined and a required front rake angle β is set, thereby allowing a mutual interpolation motion between the spindle and the workpiece to be performed; and the rotational angle of the spindle 51 is synchronously controlled with a required interrelation to the above-mentioned axial control, whereby the direction of the cutting edge of the turning tool 50 to the machined face of the workpiece is kept at a required direction at the full rotational angle position of the spindle 50 with the required front rake angle β, and the direction of the cutting edge of the turning tool 50 to the machined face of the workpiece W is kept at a required direction, and then the workpiece W is machined into a geometry determined by the interpolation locus L due to the above-mentioned mutual interpolation motion.

A numerically controlled lathe capable of machining a workpiece by numerically controlling a machining table provided with a machining tool. In order to prevent a local uneven abrasion of parts, which make a sliding contact, due to a mass production of workpieces having a simple form or a machining in a non-circular shape, there are provided a main carriage and a sub carriage. A machining tool is positioned on the sub carriage, and the sub carriage traverses on the main carriage along an axis which the main carriage and the sub carriage have in common. When a circular machining is carried out, the main carriage and the sub carriage respectively traverse by an equal amount in directions opposite to each other, and the cutting tool is constantly maintained at a position designated by an instruction. At the time of a non-circular machining, the main carriage and the sub carriage respectively traverse in directions opposite to each other; moreover, the sub carriage rapidly traverses in response to an instruction designating a location of the tool. Thus parts which make a sliding contact are evenly worn out by shifting the relative positions of both the main and sub carriages.

A first drive unit moves the tool along at least two axes to shape the workpiece similar to a desired surface. A measuring unit measures the tool position with an accuracy higher than that to which the first drive unit can respond. A signal producing unit is responsive to the measuring unit for producing a control signal for controlling the operation of the second drive unit while the first drive unit is operating.

CONSTITUTION:The XY positions of a tool supporting part 4 are measured with a laser measuring mchine, and the theoretical positions Y on a Y axis responding to the cut curved surface is estimated from detected X axis position with an arithmetic circuit 15. By comparing an actual measured value y with a theoretical one Y on the Y axis with the first comparator to control a micro-displacement element 6 by the difference thereof, while by comparing said actual measured value y with said theoretical one which were held in a hold circuit 20 with the second comparator 18 to output DELTAY to an NC control part 8 every time the difference exceeds the prescribed value DELTAY, the cutter holder is stepwise driven in the Y axis direction by the DELTAY.
