A method and apparatus for enabling a common data set to be utilized by multiple data processes. During a first operating mode, first and second data stores in a data storage facility with a common buffer attach to a first data process and act as mirrors. Data to be written transfers to the common buffer and then to the data stores. A second command produces a split whereby the first data store remains attached to the first data process and the second data store is available to the second data process. After the second command is executed, any data in the common buffer is transferred to the corresponding data stores in parallel with and transparently to the actions between the first and second data processes and the first and second data stores, respectively.

A software layer (filter driver) residing between software components or application programs running locally or on a client across a network and a persistent store of an operating system provides on-the-fly conversions of persistent information formats. The filter driver determines which format a program expects, and dynamically converts the information from its storage format to the format expected by the program. Conversion includes both data format conversion, and conversion of access semantics. Loadable conversion modules are provided for converting application specific formats due to the potential large number of such formats which can be encountered. The filter driver may change the format that information is stored in based on access history or other system requirements. The software components or application programs may be ignorant of the true storage format used by the system, and thus the filter driver can be used to transparently give old versions of software access to information stored in newer formats.

An output request enqueuing section enqueues an output request into an output request waiting queue. Performed asynchronously with the renewal processing programs, an output processing program comprises a file outputting section for outputting contents of the copied buffer area into a file device on reception of the output request dequeued from the output request waiting queue. After completion of a file output processing by means of the file outputting section, an output completion informing section stores an output completion status and a file output result status in a copied buffer information field on a buffer control table. In place of the copied buffer area securing section, an alternate copied buffer area securing section secures an alternate copied buffer area. A copied buffer area releasing section releases the copied buffer area. On ending of each of the renewal processing programs, a file output checking section checks whether or not the file output processing normally ends.
