SUMMARY During the last decade object-oriented programming has grown from marginal influence into widespread acceptance. During the same period, progress in hardware and networking has changed the computing environment from sequential to parallel. Multi-processor workstations and clusters are now quite common. Unnumbered proposals have been made to combine both developments. Always the prime objective has been to provide the advantages of object-oriented software design at the increased power of parallel machines. However, combining both concepts has proven to be notoriously difficult. Depending on the approach, often key characteristics of either the object-oriented paradigm or key performance factors of parallelism are sacrificed, resulting in unsatisfactory languages. This survey first recapitulates well-known characteristics of both the object-oriented paradigm and parallel programming, and then marks out the design space of possible combinations by identifying various interdependencies of key concepts. The design space is then filled with data points: for 111 proposed languages we provide brief characteristics and feature tables. Feature tables, the comprehensive bibliography, and web-addresses might help in identifying open questions and preventing re-inventions. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A survey of concurrent object-oriented languages

Writing ambient-oriented software for mobile devices connected through wireless network connections provides new challenges in the field of exception handling. It involves dealing with issues such as asynchronous communication, moving hardware and software, only to name a few. Building on an analysis of the fundamental differences between mobile networks and their stationary counterparts, this paper establishes a set of criteria for an ambient-oriented exception handling mechanism. We subsequently present ambient conversations, a novel distributed exception handling mechanism that adheres to the prescribed criteria, and describe its realisation in the experimental ambient-oriented programming language AmbientTalk.

Asynchronous communications are prominent in distributed and mobile systems. Often concurrent systems consider an abstract point of view with synchronous communications. However it seems more realistic and finer to consider asynchronous communicating systems, since it provides a more primitive communication protocol and maximize the concurrency. Several languages and models have been defined using this communication mode: agent, actor, mobile computation, and so on. Here we reconsider a previous component model with full data types and synchronous communications with an asynchronous flavour. The dynamic behaviour of a component is represented as a structured symbolic transition system with mailboxes. We also present an algorithm devoted to an analysis of the dynamic behaviour of the system. This algorithm decides if the system has bound mailboxes and computes the reachable mailbox contents of the system. The component model and the algorithm are illustrated on a flight system reservation.

It seems obvious that reuse should be the next contribution of object-oriented programming to concurrency. None the less, it appeared that many diiculties have to be tackled before taking advantage of the full reuse potential of object-oriented concurrent languages. Based on our experiments, this article attempts to provide a better understanding of reuse : we deene 10 language features which seem to be required if we want to achieve a high level of reusability in concurrent programming. The structure of this paper reeects the existence of two very diierent kinds of reuse : reuse of classes and routines, reuse of synchronization constraints.
