Large scientific projects present new technological challenges, such as the distributed control over a communication network. In particular, the middleware Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS) is the most extended communication standard in particle accelerators. The integration of modern control architectures in these EPICS networks is becoming common, as for example for the PXI/PXIe and xTCA hardware alternatives. In this paper, a different integration procedure for PXI/PXIe real-time controllers from National Instruments is proposed, using LabVIEW as the design tool. This methodology is considered and its performance is analyzed by means of a set of laboratory experiments. This control architecture is proposed for achieving the implementation requirements of fast controllers, which need an important amount of computational power and signal processing capability, with a tight real-time demand. The present paper studies the advantages and drawbacks of this methodology and presents its comprehensive evaluation by means of a laboratory test bench, designed for the application of systematic tests. These tests compare the proposed fast controller performance with a similar system implemented using an standard EPICS IOC provided by the CODAC system.

Design and Performance Analysis of a Nonstandard EPICS Fast Controller

ISHN (Ion Source Hydrogen Negative) consists of a Penning type ion source in operation at ESS-Bilbao facilities. From the control point of view, this source is representative of the first steps and decisions taken towards the general control architecture of the whole accelerator to be built. The ISHN main control system is based on a PXI architecture, under a real-time controller which is programmed using LabVIEW. This system, with additional elements, is connected to the general control system. The whole system is based on EPICS for the control network, and the modularization of the communication layers of the accelerator plays an important role in the proposed control architecture.

ISHN Ion Source Control System. First Steps Toward an EPICS Based ESS-Bilbao Accelerator Control System

A virtual accelerator has been developed at NSLS II to support tools development from physics study and beam commissioning to beam operation. The physics results are provided using TRACY-II simulation code thru EPICS process variables, which was pioneered originally at Diamond Light Source. The latest virtual accelerator supports all major accelerator components including magnets (Dipole, Quadrupole, Sextuple, correctors, and so on), RF cavity, insertion device, and other diagnostics devices (BPM for example), and works properly for both linear machine and synchrotron ring. Two error mechanisms are implemented, which are random error for each magnet setting, and systematic error to simulate misalignment. Meanwhile, it also provides sort of online model functions including serving beta function, and close orbit data. In NSLS II, there are 5 virtual accelerators deployed, and 3 of them are running simultaneously. Those virtual accelerators have been effectively supporting the tools development such as physics applications, and middle layer services. This paper presents the latest status of virtual accelerator, and our plan for its future development and deployment.

Design and Performance Analysis of a Non-Standard EPICS Fast Controller.

Nowadays high energy physics scientists build and design systems that are complex in terms of the huge amount of subsystems and individual components. A single subsystem may consist of a few tens of thousands digital and analogue channels and sensors. As a result, the data rates captured in modern systems may result in gigabytes per second. Complex systems could generate various alarms and provide other diagnostic information. Consequently, a huge number of variables are needed to control and monitor the system. It could be a real challenge to provide access to all alarms and diagnostic information in systems composed of thousands of channels. In this sense, it is necessary to develop a Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) that will be simple enough to describe a complex system and detailed enough to present all the relevant information to the operators. The purpose of this paper is to describe and propose an HMI scheme able to obtain and present data from High Energy Physics systems. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate HMI for complex systems. The prototype HMI described is based on the demonstration PXIe-based Neutron Flux Monitor (NFM) developed by the Department of Microelectronics and Computer Science. This NFM is going to provide essential information for plasma operation in the ITER plant. The HMI involves a Graphical User Interface and an Alarm Management Scheme, all based on the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS) framework. The Graphical User Interface (GUI) includes the use of several tools provided by the Control System Studio as well as JavaScript, rules and actions to dynamically present data to the operators. In regards to alarm management, a scheme is proposed to efficiently handle alarms by presenting the relevant information and controls to quickly react to alarms.

Human Machine Interface for data acquisition systems applied in High Energy Physics

Diamond is a new 3rd generation synchrotron light source currently being commissioned in the UK. The control system for Diamond is a site-wide monitoring and control system for the accelerators, beamlines and conventional facilities. This paper presents the design and implementation of the Diamond control system, which is based on the EPICS control system toolkit. It describes the detailed choice of hardware and software, the solutions realised for interfacing and control of the major technical systems of Diamond, and progress on installation and commissioning.
