Towards sustainable in-situ server systems in the big data era
Chao Li,Yang Hu,Longjun Liu,Juncheng Gu,Mingcong Song,Xiaoyao Liang,Jingling Yuan,Tao Li +7 more
- 13 Jun 2015
TL;DR: This work implements a heavily instrumented proof-of-concept prototype called InSURE: in-situ server systems using renewable energy, and develops a novel energy buffering mechanism and a unique joint spatio-temporal power management strategy to coordinate standalone power supplies and in-Situ servers.
HEB: deploying and managing hybrid energy buffers for improving datacenter efficiency and economy
Longjun Liu,Chao Li,Hongbin Sun,Yang Hu,Juncheng Gu,Tao Li,Jingmin Xin,Nanning Zheng +7 more
- 13 Jun 2015
TL;DR: Hybrid Energy Buffering is proposed, the first heterogeneous and adaptive strategy that incorporates super-capacitors (SCs) into existing data centers to dynamically deal with power mismatches and allows datacenters to adapt to various power supply anomalies, thereby improving operational efficiency, resiliency and economy.

Enabling datacenter servers to scale out economically and sustainably
Chao Li,Yang Hu,Ruijin Zhou,Ming Liu,Longjun Liu,Jingling Yuan,Tao Li +6 more
- 07 Dec 2013
TL;DR: Ozone allows Oasis to identify the most suitable power supply control strategies and adjust server load cooperatively to maximize overall system efficiency and reliability, and results show that Ozone could reduce the performance degradation of Ozone to 1, extend Oasis battery lifetime by over 50%, and almost triple the average battery backup capacity which is crucial for mission-critical systems.
RE-UPS: an adaptive distributed energy storage system for dynamically managing solar energy in green datacenters
TL;DR: A new power management scheme named RE-UPS is proposed, which explores the opportunity to shave datacenter peak power demand with renewable energy and leverages a dynamic heuristic algorithm to determine the appropriate energy storage allocation and server power sources.
