This article presents a secure communication scheme based on the quantized synchronization of master–slave neural networks under an event-triggered strategy. First, a dynamic event-triggered strategy is proposed based on a quantized output feedback, for which a quantized output feedback controller is formed. Second, theoretical criteria are derived to ensure the bounded synchronization of master–slave neural networks. With these criteria, an explicit upper bound is given for the synchronization error. Sufficient conditions are also provided on the existence of quantized output feedback controllers. A Chua’s circuit is chosen to illustrate the effectiveness of our theoretical results. Third, a secure communication scheme is presented based on the synchronization of master–slave neural networks by combining the basic principle of cryptology. Then, a secure image communication is studied to verify the feasibility and security performance of the proposed secure communication scheme. The impact of the quantization level and the event-triggered control (ETC) on image decryption is investigated through experiments.

Secure Communication Based on Quantized Synchronization of Chaotic Neural Networks Under an Event-Triggered Strategy

This paper aims at investigating the master–slave quasi-synchronization of delayed memristive neural networks (MNNs) by proposing a region-partitioning-dependent intermittent control. The proposed method is described by three partitions of non-negative real region and an auxiliary positive definite function. Whether the control input is imposed on the slave system or not is decided by the dynamical relationships among the three subregions and the auxiliary function. From these ingredients, several succinct criteria with the associated co-design procedure are presented such that the synchronization error converges to a predetermined level. The proposed intermittent control scheme is also applied to the event-triggered control, and an intermittent event-triggered mechanism is devised to investigate the quasi-synchronization of MNNs correspondingly. Such mechanism eliminates the events in rest time, and then it reduces the amount of samplings. Finally, two illustrative examples are presented to verify the effectiveness of our theoretical results.

Quasi-Synchronization of Delayed Memristive Neural Networks via Region-Partitioning-Dependent Intermittent Control

Image encryption is increasingly becoming an important area of research in information security and network communications as digital images are widely used in various applications and are vulnerable to various types of attacks. In this research work, a color image cryptosystem that is based on multiple layers is proposed. For every layer, an encryption key and an S-box are generated and utilized. These are based on a four-dimensional (4D) dynamical Chen system of a fractional-order, the Mersenne Twister, OpenSLL, Rule 30 Cellular Automata and Intel’s MKL. The sequential application of Shannon’s ideas of diffusion and confusion three times guarantees a total distortion of any input plain image, thereby, resulting in a totally encrypted one. Apart from the excellent and comparable performance to other state-of-the-art algorithms, showcasing resistance to visual, statistical, entropy, differential, known plaintext and brute-force attacks, the proposed image cryptosystem provides an exceptionally superior performance in two aspects: a vast key space of 21658 and an average encryption rate of 3.34 Mbps. Furthermore, the proposed image cryptosystem is shown to successfully pass all the tests of the NIST SP 800 suite.

Multiple-Layer Image Encryption Utilizing Fractional-Order Chen Hyperchaotic Map and Cryptographically Secure PRNGs

Motivated by the importance of study on the complex behaviors, which may be exhibited by fractional order differential equations, this review paper focuses on dynamical fractional order systems exhibiting chaotic behaviors. The review begins with a brief history on the first publications on the above-mentioned subject. Then, the review is continued by investigating the recent progresses relevant to fractional order chaotic systems. Furthermore, a summary on some applications for such systems, which have been reported in the literature, is presented. Finally, the paper is closed by discussing some open problems on the aforementioned research subject. These open problems, as future challenges for further study on fractional order chaotic systems, can specify some direction lines for continuing the research on that subject.

Fractional order chaotic systems: history, achievements, applications, and future challenges

Ad Hoc networks are considered essential elements of the Internet of Things (IoT), which is a technological trend for innovative future applications. Since in IoT systems the devices are mostly connected among them, the data exchange is a vital activity in the network. In this kind of networks, not only non-sensitive data exchange is performed, but also sensitive data (digital signatures, login credentials, account numbers, personal images, and so on) are shared. Therefore, new appropriate approaches to encrypt the secret information are highly required. This paper presents an experimental setup of a fractional-chaos based-cryptosystem for ad hoc networks under the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. The proposed cryptosystem is composed of a novel chaotic pairing approach between the coordinator node and end-devices nodes to sending data into the network. More specifically, the RF-data of the IEEE 802.15.4 frame is encrypted using a fractional-order encryption key and four iterative steps. It is worth to note that the chaotic key is based on a fractional-order chaotic system, which is derived from the fractional calculus theory. Fractional-order chaotic dynamics are demonstrated using the Lyapunov method and equilibria stability. Next, the experimental validation of the cryptosystem is shown sending an encrypted image between ARM digital platforms and wireless Xbee modules. Several security analyses indicate the proposed encryption scheme has suitable statistical properties, sizeable keyspace, and high sensitivity providing secure communications.

Fractional chaos based-cryptosystem for generating encryption keys in Ad Hoc networks

Many studies on fractional order chaotic systems and secure communications have been carried out, however, switching fractional order chaotic system and its application to image encryption have not been explored yet. In this paper, a new switching fractional order chaotic system is proposed, containing fractional order Chen system and the other two fractional order chaotic systems. Chaotic attractors and dynamical analysis including Lyapunov exponent, bifurcation diagram, fractal dimension, dissipation, stability and symmetry are shown firstly. After that, some circuit simulations through Multisim are presented. By controlling switch k U+2082 and k U+2083, switching among the three fractional order chaotic subsystems can be realized. Finally, we apply the switching fractional order chaotic system to image encryption using exclusive or U+0028 XOR U+0029 encryption algorithm. The encryption scheme could increase randomness and improve speed of encryption.
