This paper introduces development of a small scale microgrid which consists of a PV system, an energy storage device, and a load. The system is intended for conducting experiments to demonstrate and/or investigate different design and control issues related to microgrids. The system has also a data acquisition and power management component in order to facilitate monitoring and management of the system in different operating conditions. Hence, the system can be used for both education and research purposes. Two experiments have been provided to illustrate the flexibility of the proposed microgrid.

An experimental microgrid for laboratory activities

Salient pole synchronous generators as the main component of an electricity generation station should be carefully maintained and their operation has to be monitored such that any damage on them is avoided. Otherwise, the generating station might experience frequent shut downs which results in electricity generation interruptions and high costs associated with repairing and compensation of lack of energy. In this sense, many protective schemes focusing on a variety of synchronous generator faults have already been proposed and are still modified and developed to further enhance the quality of protection. In this thesis, synchronous generator stator windings to ground fault is studied as one of the most common and crucial faults in these machines. Numerous methods of stator winding to ground fault protection schemes are also reported in the literature. Third harmonic differential voltage and sub-harmonic schemes are studied in this research. A novel adaptive scheme for both methods is modelled and implemented in a comprehensive lab scale set-up where a real generation unit is scaled down including all different components and apparatus. The simulation model is also established based on simultaneous finite element analysis (FEA) and coupled magnetic circuit to assist with system configuration design and parameter selections. The adaptive scheme is proved to be capable of detecting stator windings to ground faults based on actual experimental data. Finally, the proposed adaptive scheme is compared against other available non-adaptive protection schemes currently used in industrial relays. Several important performance evaluation criteria in protection schemes such as sensitivity and security of operation referred to as reliability are considered. It is shown that the adaptive scheme offers higher reliability than other schemes which emphasizes its credibility and applicability.

Electromagnetic Analysis of Stator Ground Faults in Synchronous Generators

The significance of industrial process automation has rapidly increased in recent years. Sorting is a process in which two or more entities are separated. The sorting is done either manually or by using sensor and actuator. Authors have developed object sorting system using NI Compact Reconfigurable Input Output (cRIO) having Real Time/Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). Non-metallic objects on the conveyor belt are detected by proximity sensor then non-metallic objects are separated by using pneumatic cylinder. NI LabVIEW environment is used to get benefits of virtual instrumentation representation and analysis. LabVIEW Web Services enables the user in tracking the complete system. At the end, report document is generated.

Design and development of CompactRIO based object sorting system using web services

Conventional hysteresis current controllers have a major disadvantage of a variable switching frequency.To achieve a constant switching frequency,this paper presents a novel variable hysteresis control method,by using the ad-jacent current error zero crossing time to calculate the upper/lower hysteresis bandwidth.The expression of the upper/lower hysteresis bandwidth is presented.The paper analyses the necessary condition for stability of the variable hystere-sis control,and the law of hysteresis bandwidth.Aiming at a single-phase two-level voltage inverter,based on the vari-able hysteresis control method,a dead-time elimination method is presented.The principle of the proposed dead-time e-limination method,and state transitions are described.Finally,simulation and experimental results are given.

A Novel Hysteresis Current Control for Single-phase Voltage Source Inverter

The circuit of the signal acquisition module was designed and accomplished based on 24 high-precision A-E type serial A/D conversion chip ADS1258, employed Xilinx xc3s2000 FPGA as acquisition controller embedded in the chassis of N1 Compact-RIO, and host-programmed by Labview. The module achieved 16 Single-Ended input-channels with up to 23.7kHz (maximum) analog signal acquisition sampling rate. In addition to taking full advantage of ADS1258 on-chip function, the circuit contains single-ended-to-differential part, reference power, voltage isolation and other modules to ensure the accuracy and stability of the data acquisition.
