The present invention provides methods for operating data loggers and in particular, software techniques useful for controlling the critical functions of a low-power-battery-operated data logger. One method initializes various memory locations upon a detection of new firmware. Another method allows a processor system belonging to a data logger to receive a high baud rate data stream while being operated in a sleep mode. Yet another method provides a highly efficient process for estimating the remaining battery capacity of a data logger's primary power source. Finally, a method is provided for protecting volatile variables during a disruption of primary power. The protected variables are written to non-volatile memory using parasitic power only.

Computerized methods for data loggers

A system is provided with a basic input/output system (BIOS) with the ability to intervene, when a suspend process is initiated in response to an AC failure condition to place the system in a suspended to memory state, to initiate a number of data transfer operations to save a persistent copy of an operational state of the system. The BIOS is further equipped to check one or more times whether the data transfer operations are completed, and causing a processor of the system to operate in a reduced power consumption mode at least one time period while the BIOS is not performing the checking.

A battery management and protection system can include various features to improve safety-critical and other functions. Among the features that can be included in some implementations are automatic loading of safety or other parameters during start-up of the system; a centralized timekeeper and an event system that can trigger actions in the system independently of a central processing unit; use of the same modules for both automatically-controlled safety-related measurements and firmware-controlled measurements; enhanced diagnostic features, and a sleepwalking feature that allows certain modules in the system to continue to perform various functions even when the module or the system is in a low-power sleep mode.

Operating a battery management and protection system includes generating a set of events each of which has a respective frequency F/n 1 , F/n 2 . . . F/n m , where n i are integers. One or more of the events are provided to one or more modules in the system. A thermal monitoring circuit determines whether the voltage regulator has exceeded a predetermined temperature. When the over-temperature condition occurs, a signal activates the PROCHOT#, or similar, pin on a microprocessor, throttling the microprocessor clock. Where the microprocessor includes no internal power-reducing feature, the signal throttles an external clock coupled to the microprocessor. In either case, execution of the microprocessor is slowed down. At all times, the voltage regulator maintains the ability to supply continuous current to the microprocessor.

A battery operated computer system implements a power management scheme based on battery behavior. The battery behavior that is monitored as part of the power management scheme may include battery temperature, current, voltage, and/or capacity. In response to one or more of these battery parameters exceeding a threshold, the computer transitions itself to a lower power consumption mode. In so doing, the potential for the battery to shut itself off due to being over-extended (e.g., over current) is reduced.
