Systems, devices and methods for communication include an ear canal microphone configured for placement in the ear canal to detect high frequency sound localization cues. An external microphone positioned away from the ear canal can detect low frequency sound, such that feedback can be substantially reduced. The canal microphone and the external microphone are coupled to a transducer, such that the user perceives sound from the external microphone and the canal microphone with high frequency localization cues and decreased feedback. Wireless circuitry can be configured to connect to many devices with a wireless protocol, such that the user can receive and transmit audio signals. A bone conduction sensor can detect near-end speech of the user for transmission with the wireless circuitry in noisy environment. Noise cancellation of background sounds near the user can improve the user's hearing of desired sounds.

A device to transmit an audio signal comprises at least one light source configured to transmit the audio signal with at least one wavelength of light. At least one detector is configured to detect the audio signal and generate at least one electrical signal in response to the at least one wavelength of light. A transducer is supported with and configured to vibrate at least one of an eardrum, an ossicle or a cochlea. Active circuitry is coupled to the transducer to drive the transducer in response to the at least one electrical signal, so as to provide the user with high quality sound.

An open line source speaker system includes a first columnar cabinet enclosing a plurality of midrange or woofer speakers arranged in the cabinet in a vertical line and a second columnar cabinet enclosing a plurality of tweeters arranged in the cabinet in a vertical line, with the first and second cabinets being spaced a predetermined distance from each other by a pair of spacing elements and the base portion of the speaker system supporting the first and second cabinets. The vertical height of the speakers will be such as to offer a large listening window of approximately floor height to well above the listener's head. All frequencies of the music originate from the same plane as positioned from the listener thus maintaining correct time/phase relationship and correct stereo image in both the horizontal and vertical planes regardless of musical frequency. Each column is constructed as to minimize early reflections, therefore is either baffleless in the case of the tweeter column, or absolute minimum, which is the case of the midrange or woofer column.

A high fidelity loudspeaker system involving a multidriver, semi-omnidirectional, full range, electrodynamic loudspeaker including two, separate but complementary, closed box-like enclosures, an upper unit containing an array of mid-range speakers around three sides and a lower unit containing arrays of low and high frequency speakers around three sides. The low frequency speakers (woofers) on their interior sides include a series of tubes opening into the closed interior of the speaker enclosure, having various lengths in accordance with certain relative, locational relationships. Although the low and high frequency speakers include a single crossover frequency circuit, the "mid-range" speakers are not included in any crossover network but are driven throughout the total frequency input range, although a capacitor can be included to cut off the very low frequencies to the mid-range speakers. The number of speakers in the arrays in each unit can be varied, but in the lower unit the over-all speaker panel sizes remain the same with the speaker locations on each panel being made asymmetrical about the horizontal center-line, allowing for alternative, up-or-down placement. A protective outer case about the cabinet can be included having hinged wall sections, which also serve when opened out as reflective surfaces, providing a "built-in corner" (FIG. 10). For easy mobility, a handle and rollers can be provided on the back of the unit (FIG. 9). Terminal strip and electrical hook-ups are provided on the exterior of the speaker allowing flexible application and use (FIGS. 7-7C).
