Measurement of microwave and UHF signals is often done with sampling techniques. In this paper, the techniques and technology of sampling of electrical signals is reviewed from 1950 to the present. It includes both references to the open literature, as well as an extensive review of relevant patents. It also provides an overview of sampling applications and the use of computer technology to compensate and correct for errors in the sampling process.

50 years of RF and microwave sampling

Methods, systems, and apparatuses, and combinations and sub-combinations thereof, for down-converting and up-converting an electromagnetic (EM) signal are described herein. Briefly stated, in embodiments the invention operates by receiving an EM signal and recursively operating on approximate half cycles (½, 1½, 2½, etc.) of the carrier signal. The recursive operations can be performed at a sub-harmonic rate of the carrier signal. The invention accumulates the results of the recursive operations and uses the accumulated results to form a down-converted signal. In an embodiment, the EM signal is down-converted to an intermediate frequency (IF) signal. In another embodiment, the EM signal is down-converted to a baseband information signal. In another embodiment, the EM signal is a frequency modulated (FM) signal, which is down-converted to a non-FM signal, such as a phase modulated (PM) signal or an amplitude modulated (AM) signal. Up-conversion is accomplished by controlling a switch with an oscillating signal, the frequency of the oscillating signal being selected as a sub-harmonic of the desired output frequency.

Method and system for down-converting and up-converting an electromagnetic signal, and transforms for same

A communication system comprising a multi-protocol, multi-bearer sub-system is described herein. The sub-system is a universal platform module that can transmit and receive one or more information signals in one or more protocols using one or more bearer services. In one embodiment, the sub-system may form a portion of a transceiver that is composed of a transmitter and a receiver, and which is a gateway server between a personal area network (PAN) and the global wireless network.

A fast correlator transform (FCT) algorithm and methods and systems for implementing same, correlate an encoded data word (X0-XM-1) with encoding coefficients (C0-CM-1), wherein each of (X0-XM-1) is represented by one or more bits and each said coefficient is represented by one or more bits, wherein each coefficient has k possible states, and wherein M is greater than 1. In accordance with the invention, X0 is multiplied by each state (C0(0) through C0(k-1)) of the coefficient C0, thereby generating results X0C0(0) through X0C0(k-1). This is repeating for data bits (X1-XM-1) and corresponding coefficients (C1-CM-1), respectively. The results are grouped into N groups. Members of each of the N groups are added to one another, thereby generating a first layer of correlation results. The first layer of results is grouped and the members of each group are summed with one another to generate a second layer of results. This process is repeated as necessary until a final layer of results is generated. The final layer of results includes a separate correlation output for each possible state of the complete set of coefficients (C0-CM-1). The final layer of results is compared to identify a most likely code encoded on said data word. In an embodiment, the summations are pruned to exclude summations that would result in invalid combinations of the encoding coefficients (C0-CM-1). In an embodiment, substantially the same hardware is utilized for processing in-phase and quadrature phase components of the data word (X0-XM-1). In an embodiment, the coefficients (C0-CM-1) represent real numbers. In an alternative embodiment, the coefficients (C0-CM-1) represent complex numbers. In an embodiment, the coefficients (C0-CM-1) are represented with a single bit. Alternatively, the coefficients (C0-CM-1) are represented with multiple bits (e.g., magnitude). In an embodiment, the coefficients (C0-CM-1) represent a cyclic code keying (“CCK”) code set substantially in accordance with IEEE 802.11 WLAN standard.

These signals may be generated by a digital computer or other means and may be altered in phase, frequency and amplitude by simply varying the relative levels of the analog voltages applied along the transmission line, thus allowing very complex microwave waveforms to be generated.
