Principles of chemostratigraphic characterization and correlation employing whole-rock inorganic chemical data and heavy mineral grain counts are applied to the frontier Bowser and Sustut basins. Methodologies commonly used with well samples in mature petroleum provinces can be applied to field samples, providing a vital and practical link between the earliest frontier investigations and more advanced hydrocarbon exploration. The major stratigraphic divisions of the basins, the Bowser Lake and Sustut groups, have markedly different indications of sedimentary provenance from heavy mineral analysis, and are readily differentiated geochemically. Variations in key elements are related directly to the provenance indications identified by heavy minerals. Lithofacies assemblages within the Bowser Lake Group also display contrasting provenance signatures. Sandstones and conglomerates from marine facies (Ritchie-Alger, Todagin, and Muskaboo Creek assemblages) are differentiated from those of the deltaic and nonmarine units (Eaglenest, Skelhorne, Groundhog-Gunanoot and Jenkins Creek assemblages) by higher Fe2O3 and MgO contents, which may relate to increased glauconite contents in marine units. Sandstones and conglomerates from the deltaic to nonmarine units are separated with less certainty by heavy mineral contents and element concentrations or ratios.

New research on energy resource potential of the Bowser and Sustut basins includes fieldwork in the central Bowser Basin, and a suite of energy-resource-related thematic studies. The new data and interpretations of thematic studies provide advances on a number of fronts. For example, new apatite fission-track thermochronology data are consistent with the regional levels of thermal maturation as defined by vitrinite-reflectance studies. The latter indicate highly variable thermal maturity. The northern Bowser Basin and western Sustut Basin are in the early oil to condensate-dry gas generation stage of thermal maturation, making these areas the most prospective for petroleum generation and preservation. Highlights of recent research in the Bowser and Sustut Basins Project, British Columbia

Dinosaur bones were discovered in 1971 during uranium exploration in the Sustut Basin, northern British Columbia, Canada. These bones have more recently been prepared and described and represent an indeterminate cerapodan dinosaur. Although dinosaur bones have been reported from British Columbia before now, this specimen represents their earliest recorded discovery from the province. The bones were collected from loose blocks in a talus slope, near the intersection of Birdflat Creek and the Sustut River. They are encased in hard siltstone that shares characteristics with adjacent outcrops of the Upper Cretaceous Brothers Peak Formation. Bones collected include the right humerus, right radius, the distal portion of the right tibia and fibula, two right pedal phalanges, including two unguals, and several unidentifiable fragments.

Recent research on energy resource potential of the Bowser and Sustut basins includes identifying effective petroleum systems, increasing geographic coverage of thermal maturity data, initiating paleomagnetic studies, and geological mapping. Crude oil samples extracted and characterized from four locations yield results that confirm a recently published revised thermal maturity model for the region and identify potential petroleum systems with sources in the Stikine Assemblage and younger strata. Identification of Stikinia sources and recognition of possible reservoirs in the Hazelton Group indicates that strata below the Bowser Lake Group might also be prospective for petroleum accumulation. Paleomagnetic sampling of Permian to Late Jurassic strata has the capacity to recognize several periods of deformation, burial history, igneous heating, and fluid migrations. New mapping in McConnell Creek area significantly revises distribution of upper Hazelton Group clastic rocks, assigns lithofacies assemblages to Bowser Lake Group strata, and modifies Sustut Group map distribution and structures. 1 Northern Resource Development Program Page 1 Resume : Des recherches recentes sur le potentiel energetique des roches des bassins de Bowser et de Sustut consistaient a identifier des systemes petroliers effectifs, a accroitre la couverture geographique des donnees sur la maturite thermique, a entreprendre des etudes paleomagnetiques et a effectuer des leves geologiques. La caracterisation de petrole brut extrait en quatre lieux differents a permis de confirmer l’exactitude d’un modele de maturite thermique de la region presente dans une publication recente et de localiser des systemes petroliers potentiels qui prendraient leur source dans l’Assemblage de Stikine et des strates plus jeunes. L’identification de sources de petrole dans la Stikinie et l’existence possible de roches reservoirs dans le Groupe de Hazelton indiquent que les strates sous le Groupe de Bowser Lake seraient aussi le siege d’une accumulation de petrole. L’analyse paleomagnetique de roches datant du Permien au Jurassique tardif pourrait permettre de reconnaitre les periodes de deformation, l’histoire de l’enfouissement, le rechauffement du au magmatisme et les migrations de fluides. Suite a de nouveaux leves dans la region cartographique du ruisseau McConnell, la repartition des roches clastiques de la partie superieure du Groupe de Hazelton a ete considerablement modifiee, les strates du Groupe de Bowser Lake ont ete divisees en assemblages de lithofacies, et des changements ont ete apportes a la distribution geographique des strates du Groupe de Sustut ainsi qu’aux elements structuraux qui s’y rapportent.

Recent results and activities of the Integrated Petroleum Resource Potential and Geoscience Studies of the Bowser and Sustut Basins Project, British Columbia

Crude oils extracted from Bowser Lake and Sustut groups have distinctive compositions that are inferred to be indicative of at least three effective petroleum systems that have generated, expelled and accumulated crude oil. Compositional differences among the three effective petroleum systems are illustrated by compositional variations of steranes, complicated molecules that have retained structural similarities to their inferred biological precursor, cholesterol. Oil stains occur widely, both geographically and stratigraphically. One compositional oil family is inferred to be derived from Stikine assemblage, the sub-Hazelton succession. This petroleum is derived from pre-Jurassic marine carbonate source rocks deposited in hypersaline to mesohaline environments. A second compositional oil family is derived from Mesozoic open marine source rocks, that are inferred to be within the upper Hazelton or lower Bowser Lake Group, as the lowest stratigraphic occurrence of these oils lies in marine slope deposits of Bowser clastic wedge. A third oil family is inferred to be derived from lacustrine Mesozoic source rocks occurs in northern Bowser and Sustut Basins, where it is probably derived from thick, often coaly, non-marine Bowser Lake successions. The occurrence and composition of these crude oils expand the petroleum prospectivity of the Bowser and Sustut basins by reducing petroleum system risks and indicating a possible petroleum system for Hazelton Group, which is now attributed petroleum potential.
