Coding techniques for a (e.g., OFDM) communication system capable of transmitting data on a number of “transmission channels” at different information bit rates based on the channels' achieved SNR. A base code is used in combination with common or variable puncturing to achieve different coding rates required by the transmission channels. The data (i.e., information bits) for a data transmission is encoded with the base code, and the coded bits for each channel (or group of channels with the similar transmission capabilities) are punctured to achieve the required coding rate. The coded bits may be interleaved (e.g., to combat fading and remove correlation between coded bits in each modulation symbol) prior to puncturing. The unpunctured coded bits are grouped into non-binary symbols and mapped to modulation symbols (e.g., using Gray mapping). The modulation symbol may be “pre-conditioned” and prior to transmission.

These improvements enhance the performance of various communication systems and consumer electronics. Particular improvements are also provided for decoding HD Radio signals, including enhanced decoding of reference subcarriers based on soft-diversity combining, joint enhanced channel state information estimation, as well as iterative soft-input soft-output and list decoding of convolutional codes and Reed-Solomon codes. These and other improvements enhance the decoding of different logical channels in HD Radio systems.

An OFDM communication device comprising determining means for determining the number of transmission line estimating known signals to be inserted into a transmission signal on the basis of the line quality between the device and a communicating party and producing means for producing a transmission signal to the communicating party by subjecting an information signal and the transmission line estimating known signals the number of which is determined by the determining means to inverse transform. The device can improve both the error rate characteristics of a modulated signal and the transmission efficiency of the information signal.

A broadcasting method encodes program material using convolutional codes having non-puncturable bits and puncturable bits and modulates orthogonal frequency division multiplexed carrier signals with the convolutional codes. The non-puncturable bits are carried by a first group of the carriers and the puncturable bits are carried by a second group of the carriers, where the first group of carrier signals is less susceptible to interference than the second group of carrier signals. The carrier signals are then broadcast to receivers which determining if the carriers in the second group have been corrupted and erase puncturable bits carried by any of the carriers which have been determined to be corrupted. This produces punctured codes which are subsequently decodes to recover the program material.
