A technique of operating a wireless communication system includes determining respective geometries of multiple subscriber stations, which include a first subscriber station and a second subscriber station, with respect to a serving base station. Respective channel sounding bandwidths for sounding the channel between the multiple subscriber stations and the serving base station are then scheduled, based on the respective geometries. The respective channel sounding bandwidths include a first channel sounding bandwidth (associated with the first subscriber station) and a second channel sounding bandwidth (associated with the second subscriber station). The first channel sounding bandwidth is greater than or equal to the second channel sounding bandwidth and the first subscriber station has a lower geometry than the second subscriber station.

Channel and correlation characteristics are determined for a composite signal. Respective combining weights for information from the composite signal are determined for respective ones of a plurality of candidate delays based on the determined channel and correlation characteristics. A group of delays, e.g., RAKE correlator delays or chip equalizer filter taps, is selected from the plurality of candidate delays based on the determined weights. Information from the composite signal for the selected delays is processed according to a spreading code to generate a symbol estimate. The invention may be embodied as methods, apparatus and computer program products.

A combined SAIC receiver and a multiple-antenna, receive diversity receiver are employed to reduce interference in a wireless system. The real and imaginary parts of the de-rotated signal for each receive path associated with an antenna are separately filtered and a combined output signal of all receive paths is generated. The weighting coefficients are adjusted based on an error signal produced by comparing the combined output signal with a reference signal. The weighting coefficients are initially set based on an MMSE/LS type of signal processing criteria, where the reference signal is the Training Sequence Code (TSC). Subsequent adjustment/tracking can be accomplished by using known tracking algorithms, e.g. LMS or RLS, or the coefficients can be re-computed using MMSE/LS processing. The reference signal for tracking may be a combination of the TSC and estimated data symbols provided by an equalizer.

Method and apparatus for filtering noisy estimates to reduce estimation errors

A frequency domain representation of a whitening filter is made to depend on essentially one unknown, namely, a scaling factor that is based on an estimated ratio of total base station power to the power spectral density (PSD) of inter-cell interference plus noise. In turn, that scaling factor can be computed based on the modeling terms used in a parametric model of the impairment correlations for a received communication signal. Preferably, the model comprises an interference impairment term scaled by a first model fitting parameter, and a noise impairment term scaled by a second model fitting parameter. Further, the scaling factor can be computed by directly estimating total base station transmit power and the PSD of inter-cell interference plus noise. In any case, the whitening filter can be used in whitening a received communication signal in conjunction with channel equalization processing or RAKE receiver processing, for example.
