A method in a storage device includes receiving from a host storage commands for execution in a non-volatile memory of the storage device. At least a subset of the storage commands are to be executed in accordance with an order-of-arrival in which the storage commands in the subset are received. The received storage commands are executed in the non-volatile memory in accordance with internal scheduling criteria of the storage device, which permit deviations from the order-of-arrival, but such that execution of the storage commands in the subset reflects the order-of-arrival to the host.

Disclosed is a processor, which reduces issuing of unnecessary barrier operations during instruction processing. The processor comprises an instruction sequencing unit and a load store unit (LSU) that issues a group of memory access requests that precede a barrier instruction in an instruction sequence. The processor also includes a controller, which in response to a determination that all of the memory access requests hit in a cache affiliated with the processor, withholds issuing on an interconnect a barrier operation associated with the barrier instruction. The controller further directs the load store unit to ignore the barrier instruction and complete processing of a next group of memory access requests following the barrier instruction in the instruction sequence without receiving an acknowledgment.

Processor communication registers (PCRs) contained in each processor within a multiprocessor system and interconnected by a specialized bus provides enhanced processor communication. Each PCR stores identical processor communication information that is useful in pipelined or parallel multi-processing. Each processor has exclusive rights to store to a sector within each PCR and has continuous access to read the contents of its own PCR. Each processor updates its exclusive sector within all of the PCRs utilizing communication over the specialized bus, instantly allowing all of the other processors to see the change within the PCR data, and bypassing the cache subsystem. Efficiency is enhanced within the multiprocessor system by providing processor communications to be immediately transferred into all processors without momentarily restricting access to the information or forcing all the processors to be continually contending for the same cache line, and thereby overwhelming the interconnect and memory system with an endless stream of load, store and invalidate commands.

A mechanism synchronizes among processors of a processing engine in an intermediate network station. The processing engine is configured as a systolic array having a plurality of processors arrayed as rows and columns. That is, the barrier synchronization function allows all participating processors within a column to reach a common point within their instruction code sequences before any of the processors proceed.

By the synchronization transaction, the main memory serializes the memory accesses and the coherence controller guarantees the completion of the cache coherence control. This makes it possible to serialize the memory accesses and guarantee the completion of the cache coherence control at the same time.
