The object of the present invention is to provide a
method for masking a portion of a material to be carburized
or nitrided in partial carburizing and nitriding treatment,
in which the powder for prevention of carburizing or
nitriding is coated on metal materials, only the portion to
be masked is heated by laser beam, so that the powder is
fused and bonded to form a masking film on said portion
alone.

An article and method for stabilization of a nickel-based superalloy coated with a diffusion aluminide coating. The region below the aluminide coating is first carburized to form refractory carbides. The article is cleaned and masked as required so that regions that will not have an aluminide coating are not carburized. After placing the article into a furnace and heating in a non-oxidizing atmosphere to a carburizing temperature, a carburizing gas is introduced, and the near surface region is carburized to a depth of about 100 microns. Refractory carbides are formed in this region. When a diffusion aluminide coating is formed on the article, the refractory elements, being present as refractory carbides, are not available to form detrimental TCP phases.

An Fe-based sintered alloy manufactured through this process and a bearing cap made of such an Fe-based sintered alloy are also disclosed. In the invention, a film including a compound of boron and pyrolytic resin can be used instead of the paste-like coating agent.

The invention provides a gear anti-carburizing treatment method which includes the steps: firstly, washing an anti-carburizing area of a gear by the aid of washing agents; secondly, washing the washed anti-carburizing area of the gear by the aid of clear water, and then drying the washed anti-carburizing area; thirdly, brushing anti-carburizing coatings on the dried washed anti-carburizing area of the gear; fourthly, heating and drying the gear brushed with the anti-carburizing coatings. By the gear anti-carburizing treatment method, the anti-carburizing coatings can be firmly coated on a non-carburizing portion, cannot blister or peel off after baking and cannot fall off in quenching, so that non-uniform hardness of the non-carburizing portion and mottling are prevented.
