The present invention provides a method and apparatus for scheduling the presentation of a continuously-changing display (702) to computer users, and is particularly well-suited for use in an advertisement-supported e-mail service. An advertisement display scheduler (700) resident on a user's computer receives advertisements from a server system over a network. Upon receipt, the advertisement display scheduler (700) determines the priority of the advertisement (MSG01 .... MSGnn) and assigns it to one of a plurality of prioritized advertisement queues (Qo .... Qn). Each queue is sorted (701) according to predetermined scheduling criteria so that advertisements deemed 'more important' are presented to a user first. The advertisement display scheduler (700) logs statistical information relating to the presentation of advertisements for use in updating the scheduling criteria, and makes such statistical information available to the server system.

Method and apparatus for scheduling the presentation of messages to computer users

A system, method and various software products provide for automatic deferral and review of e-mail messages and other data objects in a networked computer system, by applying business rules to the messages as they are processed by post offices. The system includes rule enforcing post offices that store a plurality of business rules derived from business communication policies. The rule enforcing post offices receive messages from client applications and from other post offices and apply the business rules with a rule engine. The rule engine determines a set of actions, specified by business rules that are fired, to be applied to each message. The rule engine provides the actions to a distribution engine, which executes a highest priority action. Actions include releasing, deleting, returning, forwarding, or gating the message. Gating forwards the message to a gatekeeper, an administrator assigned to review messages for conformity with business policies or for other reasons. The gated messages are received by the gatekeeper at a gatekeeping post office. A gatekeeper can review the gated messages, and then manually release, delete, return, or further gate the message. Alternatively, if the gatekeeper does not review a gated message with a specified time period, the message is automatically reviewed by the gatekeeping post office with its own set of business rules. Having multiple post offices with independent sets of business rules allows for distributed and hierarchical review and gating of the messages. The system can route any type of data object, and apply the business rules to such objects in a similar manner.

The present invention relates to a system and methodology to enable a variety of information associated with one or more notification sources to be directed to one or more notification sinks via a notification platform architecture. The architecture includes a context analyzer for determining a user's state such as location and attentional focus, wherein the user's state is employed by a notification manager to make decisions regarding what, when and how information generated by the notification sources should be forwarded to the notification sinks, for example. These decisions can include a cost benefit analysis wherein considerations are given as to whether the benefits of notifying the user are outweighed by the costs of disrupting the user. Decision-theoretic policies and/or somewhat less formal heuristic policies can be employed to enable the decision-making process within the notification manager.

Notification platform architecture

A system and method of filtering junk e-mails. A user is provided with or compiles a list of e-mail addresses or character strings which a user would not wish to receive to produce a first filter. A second filter is provided including names and character strings which the user wishes to receive. Any e-mail addresses or strings contained in the first filter will be automatically eliminated from the user's system. Any e-mail addresses or strings contained in the second filter would be automatically sent to the user's “in box”. Any e-mail not provided in either of the filtered lists will be sent to a “waiting room” for user review. This user review results in the user rejecting any e-mail, the addresses as well as specific character strings included in this e-mail would be transmitted to a central location to be included in a master list. This master list is periodically sent to each of the users allowing the first filter to be updated. A collaborative filter is used employing message base filtering that is not effected by e-mail header forgery and utilizes the networked intelligence of end users to maintain a highly inaccurate and comprehensive filter. The collaborative filter would then use the real-time input from the end users to keep the users involved in the filtering process.

E-mail filter and method thereof

The present invention discloses a novel system for controlling the inbound and outbound data packet flow in a computer network. By controlling the packet flow in a computer network, private networks can be secured from outside attacks in addition to controlling the flow of packets from within the private network to the outside world. A user generates a rule base which is then converted into a set of filter language instruction. Each rule in the rule base includes a source, destination, service, whether to accept or reject the packet and whether to log the event. The set of filter language instructions are installed and execute on inspection engines which are placed on computers acting as firewalls. The firewalls are positioned in the computer network such that all traffic to and from the network to be protected is forced to pass through the firewall. Thus, packets are filtered as they flow into and out of the network in accordance with the rules comprising the rule base. The inspection engine acts as a virtual packet filtering machine which determines on a packet by packet basis whether to reject or accept a packet. If a packet is rejected, it is dropped. If it is accepted, the packet may then be modified. Modification may include encryption, decryption, signature generation, signature verification or address translation. All modifications are performed in accordance with the contents of the rule base. The present invention provides additional security to a computer network by encrypting communications between two firewalls between a client and a firewall. This permits the use of insecure public networks in constructing a WAN that includes both private and public network segments, thus forming a virtual private network.

A system for securing the flow of and selectively modifying packets in a computer network

A flexible, event driven and conditional rule based mail messaging system which can be transparently implemented for use in electronic mail applications. A rule mechanism is implemented having a "When-If-Then" event-driven, conditional, action-invoking paradigm or "triplet" which permits definition of a repertoire of events considered to be significant events upon which to trigger actions in the electronic mail messaging system. Each particular event may be associated with a specific mail message and/or rules to promote efficient mapping of messages, events and rules so that only rules associated with a specific event are invoked upon occurrence of the event. Only relevant rules, i.e. those associated with a satisfied event, need be further processed. A graphical user interface to a structured rule editor facilitates synthesis of rules by a user via a substantially transparent rule engine.
