A breakaway safety sign support post for obtaining predictable and reliable separation of an upper post section from a lower post section anchored in a substrate, when the post is struck by a vehicle. In a specific construction, the lower post section is adapted to be imbedded in the ground, with an upper end projecting a predetermined limited distance above the surface of the ground. The upper, post section is secured in overlapping, parallel relationship with the lower post section and is secured thereto with frangible fasteners to define a breakaway joint. The post sections each have a U-shaped transverse cross-sectional shape, including a longitudinal center web with a plurality of holes spaced uniformly along its length, and outwardly divergent side walls at opposite sides of the web, terminating in laterally outwardly projecting flanges. When nested together in overlapping relationship, the outwardly divergent side walls lie in surface-to-surface contact with one another and the webs are in spaced apart relationship. In accordance with the invention, an elongate spacer bar is engaged between the spaced apart webs and is secured to the post sections by the fasteners extended therethrough. In particular, the spacer bar has threaded openings at its opposite ends and the fasteners are threaded bolts engaged through the spacer bar. The spacer bar extends substantially completely along the overlapped end portions of the upper and lower post sections, stiffening the splice and providing adequate strength to absorb ambient wind loads, and at the same time providing a predictable and reliable breakaway joint when an errant vehicle collides with the sign post. The threaded spacer bar also insures that the fasteners are in properly spaced relationship to one another, and facilitates the ease of installation, whereby one person can install the breakaway sign support post of the invention.

A sign post is formed of a lower support component for anchoring within terrain, leaving an exposed upper portion at the surface of such terrain. The support component includes an array of longitudinally regularly spaced apertures. An upper support component having the same regular spacing of apertures is attached to the lower component at the exposed portion through the utilization of a splicing technique. The splice is formed as a stress transfer component having two strategically positioned boltways therein. These boltways are spaced apart longitudinally a distance representing an even integer of the upper and lower component aperture spacings. The boltways are configured having a small threaded region adjacent one surface. Bolts having a threadless shank and threaded region therebelow are slidably inserted through one of the components into the stress transfer whereupon they are rotated for preassembly engagement with the minor threaded regions of the stress transfer component. In the course of sign assemblage, the bolts are tightened to deform or strip the threads within the stress transfer component. When the splice is completed by the addition of nuts to the ends of the bolts, the bolts are substantially unrestricted by threaded engagement within the stress transfer component and the splice or joint affected is more structurally definable, permitting the bolts to yield along their lengths under load.

A substantially rigid reinforcing member may be disposed within an open inner volume of the display device. The reinforcing member may have an aperture therein with an impact absorbing member disposed therewithin. An open inner volume of the impact absorbing member may be occupied by a disparate impact absorbing material such as particulate matter or liquid. A retaining base with a base floor and an annular retaining wall disposed at the periphery of the base floor base may be provided for retaining a bottom end of the first and second body elements. The retaining base may be fastened to the first and second body elements by, for example, retaining bolts that may be fixed relative to a surrounding environmental surface or by ground spikes projecting through the display device and into a surrounding environmental surface. A volume of ballast may be disposed within the open inner volume of the display device for maintaining the display device in a given location and orientation.

The driving stake means supports the elongated flexible tubular body as well as an axially aligned reinforcing rod or rods positioned in the hollow tube body and extending from the driving head of the stake means through a substantial portion of the length of the tubular body. In another embodiment, a solid elongated one-piece resilient post terminating at a lower end portion in a driving stake and driving head means is presented wherein both embodiments provide for driving force to be exerted against the driving head means or the stake portion thus allowing a resilient post member.
