A software application (110) is updated to a newer version by means of incremental update patches (122). The incremental update patches (122) each contain that information necessary to transform one version of an application to another version. Any version of an application (110) may be upgraded to any other version of the application, through the use of a series of incremental update patches (122). The appropriate incremental update patches (122) are distributed in a multi-tiered manner, such that some update patches (122) update the application (110) by only one version, and others update the application (110) by several versions.

An incoming message either carries priority information, or is assigned priority information based on a shared characteristic with other messages. Methods and systems for network-based or Internet-based software delivery are described. In one embodiment, an application program or software platform resides on a client. The program or platform is configured so that it is extensible based on software extensions that are deliverable over a network such as the Internet. Various extensions can be developed by third party developers for incorporation into the program or platform. In the described embodiment, extension files that comprise a software extension are hosted on an Internet server. Additional files are also hosted on the Internet server and describe aspects of the software extension. The additional files include files that describe a logical attachment of the extension to the program or platform, as well as files that describe the location of the extension files. Extensions are incorporated on a client by navigating to a particular Internet site through which the extensions can be accessed. The files describing the extension files are downloaded on the client. These files tell the client where the particular extension is to be plugged in, as well as where to find the appropriate extension files and how to download them. The extension files are then downloaded and incorporated into the program or platform.

Network-based software extensions

A multiple stage installation system for the installation and setup of a suite of applications segregates and organizes the preparation, installation, clean up, optimization, etc. into functional groupings that define the multiple stages of the installation process. These functional groupings include actions to be performed on behalf of and to any and all of the applications to be installed. While different stages may be defined, the system preferably includes a pre-install phase, an install phase, and a post-install phase during which different functional activities are performed. An optimization phase may also be included to allow optimization of applications that have already been installed. In a preferred embodiment, the applications to be installed implement a COM interface that contains a method for each stage supported. The core installation system determines the installation order for the applications, acquires the COM interface from the application, and for each install stage, calls the appropriate method on that interface. Each application's method for a given stage is called before any methods of any applications for the next stage.

System and method of multiple-stage installation of a suite of applications

A system and method for installing an application on a client device (e.g., a palmtop computer system) communicatively coupled to a host device (e.g., a host computer system). Instead of transferring an application to the client device from another client device, the client device receives a description of the application from the other client device. When the client device and the host device are synchronized, the description is automatically communicated by the client device to the host device, which is also in communication with a source (e.g., an application source). Additional information, such as the type of hardware or the type of operating system used by the client device, is also automatically communicated to the host device by the client device. The host device communicates to the source a specification comprising the description of the application as well as the additional information pertaining to the client device. The host device receives from the source a software element (e.g., a component, object or file for the application, or the application itself) characterized by the specification. The host device automatically makes the software element ready for installation on the client device. The software element is then installed on the client device when the host device and the client device are subsequently synchronized. The process of identifying and retrieving an application and making it ready for installation is performed automatically without user intervention, thereby simplifying for users the process of finding and downloading applications onto the client device.

Modular configuration and distribution of applications customized for a requestor device

A method and a system which are capable of efficiently implementing an install of a program into a computer. The program installation is implemented when a great number of computers having different configurations are involved, when the computers are connected in a network, and when the stand-alone computers and the computers connected in the network are mixed together. The method of the present invention includes the steps of reading from a parameter file a content required for a predetermined process with reference to an environment of a computer into which the program is installed; calculating the content of the parameter file being read as an expression interpretive function representative of an expression form including a function; implementing the function included in the expression of the expression interpretive function when the expression interpretive function actually includes the function; implementing the predetermined process based on a result of the implementation; and installing the computer program so as to be adapted to the environment of the computer into which the computer program is installed by implementing the predetermined process.
