An intelligent gateway device provided at a premise (home or business) for providing and managing application services associated with use and support of a plurality of digital endpoint devices associated with the premises. The device includes a communications and processing infrastructure integrated with a peer and presence messaging based communications protocol for enabling communications between the device and an external support network and between the device and connected digital endpoint devices. A services framework at the gateway device implements the communications and processing infrastructure for enabling service management, service configuration, and authentication of user of services at the intelligent gateway. The framework provides a storage and execution environment for supporting and executing received service logic modules relating to use, management, and support of the digital endpoint devices. Thus, the gateway device provides a network-based services point of presence for a plurality of digital endpoint devices at the premises.

Multi-services application gateway and system employing the same

In recent years, the home environment has seen a rapid introduction of network enabled digital technology. This technology offers new and exciting opportunities to increase the connectivity of devices within the home for the purpose of home automation. Moreover, with the rapid expansion of the Internet, there is the added potential for the remote control and monitoring of such network enabled devices. However, the adoption of home automation systems has been slow. This paper identifies the reasons for this slow adoption and evaluates the potential of ZigBee for addressing these problems through the design and implementation of a flexible home automation architecture. A ZigBee based home automation system and Wi-Fi network are integrated through a common home gateway. The home gateway provides network interoperability, a simple and flexible user interface, and remote access to the system. A dedicated virtual home is implemented to cater for the system's security and safety needs. To demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed system, four devices, a light switch, radiator valve, safety sensor and ZigBee remote control have been developed and evaluated with the home automation system.

This paper presents an approach to the development of Smart Home applications by integrating Internet of Things (IoT) with Web services and Cloud computing. The approach focuses on: (1) embedding intelligence into sensors and actuators using Arduino platform, (2) networking smart things using Zigbee technology, (3) facilitating interactions with smart things using Cloud services, (4) improving data exchange efficiency using JSON data format. Moreover, we implement three use cases to demonstrate the approach's feasibility and efficiency, i.e., measuring home conditions, monitoring home appliances, and controlling home access.

Under a multi-task environment, a tamper resistant microprocessor saves a context information for one program whose execution is to be interrupted, where the context information contains information indicating an execution state of that one program and the execution code encryption key of that one program. An execution of that one program can be restarted by recovering the execution state of that one program from the saved context information. The context information can be encrypted by using the public key of the microprocessor, and then decrypted by using the secret key of the microprocessor.

We propose a home network architecture, which integrates heterogeneous home network environments. Our architecture incorporates various home network technologies into the gateway technology. We use link-layer dependent protocols within a single network communication, and, in contrast, we use the gateway technology when the communication is over multiple networks. We also propose home gateway architectures, which are the key component of the residential network. The home gateway interconnects the home networks and the public (access) network. We show the requirements of the home gateway and its software design. We implemented the experimental home gateway system, which is based on the Web server enhanced with Java facilities. The home gateway interconnects the Internet on the public network side, and the home networks (IEEE 1394 AV network and the home automation power line network). It also has a real-time MPEG4 transcoding function which transcodes AV data on IEEE1394 into MPEG4 video that is suitable for transmitting through the Internet. The home gateway provides the capability of remote control of the connected appliances on the home networks from the Internet, and the AV data transmission/translation capabilities.

In a microprocessor that internally has a microprocessor specific secret key, a key management unit is provided to carry out a key registration for reading out from an external memory a distribution key that is obtained in advance by encrypting the instruction key by using a public key corresponding to the secret key, decrypting the distribution key by using the secret key to obtain the instruction key, and registering the instruction key in correspondence to a specific program identifier for identifying the program into a key table, and to notify a completion of the key registration to the processor core asynchronously by interruption when the key registration is completed.
