The invention provides an information recognition apparatus for recognition of an address or the like which can recognize recognition object information, which is inputted in the form which does not have punctuations or element designations, at a high speed and with a high degree of accuracy. An element word recognition unit detects element word candidates of each information element of recognition element information and likelihoods of the element word candidates. A record number acquisition unit retrieves a record storage unit to acquire, for each element word candidate detected by the element word recognition unit, a record number of a record including the element word candidate. A likelihood calculation unit calculates likelihoods of the records using corresponding likelihood counters. A result discrimination unit discriminates a record to be determined as a recognition result of the recognition object information based on count values of the likelihood counters, and a result extraction unit extracts a record to be determined as a recognition result from the record storage section based on a result of the discrimination of the result discrimination unit.

The part 13 extracts the information forming characters out of the picture information and recognizes each character. Based on this recognizing result, a word recognizing part 15 recognizes words by means of a 1st data base 17. In this word recognizing process, the recognizing result is not merely obtained but plural recognizing candidates are obtained in the order of higher degrees of likelihood. Thus plural words are outputted as the recognizing candidates. An address recognizing part 21 recognizes addresses by means of a 2nd data base 19 after the words are recognized. Then the recognized addresses are outputted via an output part 23.

PURPOSE:To accurately perform recognition even when the meaning of an abbreviated name is overlapped by constituting a dictionary by registering a homonym as a reference type on a word, and executing the evaluation of the word by adding the homonym on the reference type. CONSTITUTION:Image information obtained at an input part 11 is supplied to a character detection recognition part 13, and information comprising a character is extracted from the image information, and a recognition processing is executed on individual character. Word recognition is executed on the above result at a word recognition part 15 by using a first data base. After the execution of the word recognition, address recognition is performed at an address recognition part 21 by using a second data base 19, and a recognition result is supplied to an output device 23, then, it is displayed. And the dictionary is comprised by registering the homonym as the reference type on the word, and the evaluation of the word is executed by adding the homonym on the reference type. In such a way, it is possible to accurately execute the word recognition.
