Comparison of length, volume, and effusion rate for 87 historic Hawaiian basaltic lava flows shows little support for a direct relationship between flow length and effusion rate. A statistically more significant relationship exists between flow length and total volume of material extruded. Cross-sectional area, effusion rate, and volume all play important roles in governing the emplacement of lava flows in Hawaii; no single factor appears most important. One reason for the observed relationships in Hawaii may be that tube-fed flows, with approximately constant cross-sectional area, advance farther than other types of flows for similar effusion rates and volumes.

Lengths of Hawaiian lava flows.

Field evidence, map compilation, geochemistry, geochronology, and potential field data document six intervals of Cretaceous magmatism in the central Sverdrup Basin. These are: (1) Hauterivian (ca. 130 Ma) volcaniclastic deposition in the lower Isachsen Formation; (2) 126.6 ± 1.2 Ma (U-Pb zircon) gabbroic intrusion; (3) 120.8 ± 0.8 Ma (U-Pb baddeleyite) diabasic intrusion; (4) 105.40 ± 0.22 Ma (U-Pb detrital zircon) pyroclastic deposition at the top of the Invincible Point Member, Christopher Formation; (5) upper Albian (ca. 103 Ma) pillow and hydroclastic breccia in the upper Christopher Formation; and (6) uppermost Albian (ca. 101 Ma) volcanic breccia and scoria in the Hassel Formation. Whole-rock geochemical data show that these magmatic rocks are similar to previously documented High Arctic large igneous province tholeiitic basalts, but analyses of fresh glass in tuffs reveal evolved ferroandesite to dacite compositions not recorded in whole-rock data. Approximate ages of saucer-shaped sills inferred from the relationship of sill width to depth of emplacement suggest at least three intervals of sill emplacement between 130 and 120 Ma. The new data show that volcanism in the Sverdrup Basin was of greater spatial extent, and that magmatism occurred more frequently, than was previously recognized. Comparison of the new central Sverdrup Basin data and interpretations with other data sets from the Sverdrup Basin, Svalbard, and Franz Josef Land suggests that High Arctic large igneous province magmatism occurred over a more extended period of time in the central Sverdrup Basin than in other regions.

The Strand Fiord Formation is a volcanic unit of early Late Cretaceous age which outcrops on west-central and northwestern Axel Heiberg Island in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. The formation is part of the thick Sverdrup Basin succession and immediately precedes the final basin foundering event. The Strand Fiord volcanics are encased in marine strata and thin southward from a maximum thickness of 789+ m on northwestern Axel Heiberg to a zero edge near the southern shore of the island. Tholeiitic icelandite flows are the main constituent of the formation with volcaniclastic conglomerates, sandstones, mudrocks and rare coal seams also being present. The lava flows range in thickness from 6 to 60 m and subaerial flows predominate. Both pahoehoe and aa lava types are common and the volcanic pile accumulated mostly by the quiet effusion of lavas. The volcaniclastic lithologies become more common near the southern and eastern edges of the formation and represent lahars and beach to shallow marine reworked deposits. The Strand Fiord volcanics are interpreted to represent the cratonward extens,ion of the Alpha Ridge, a volcanic ridge that was active during the formation of the Amerasian Basin.
