Imaging the phase separation in atomically thin buried SrTiO(3) layers by electron channeling.
L. Fitting Kourkoutis,C. Stephen Hellberg,V. Vaithyanathan,Hao Li,M. K. Parker,K. E. Andersen,D. G. Schlom,David A. Muller +7 more
TL;DR: Density-functional calculations predict the ground state is a coexistence of 2 x 1 Sr-reconstructed Si and Sr-deficient SrTiO(3), in correspondence with the observed islanding.

Local structural distortions in strained Ba 0.5 Sr 0.5 TiO 3 thin films
TL;DR: In this article, the accuracy of the atomic geometries predicted by density-functional theory is demonstrated by simulations of the near-edge x-ray-absorption fine-structure spectra using a Bethe-Salpeter treatment of the Ti $1s$ core-hole interaction in the films.
Ferroelectric distortion in SrTiO 3 thin films on Si ( 001 ) by x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy: Experiment and first-principles calculations
Joseph C. Woicik,Eric L. Shirley,C. S. Hellberg,K. E. Andersen,Sharadha Sambasivan,Daniel A. Fischer,B D. Chapman,Edward A. Stern,Philip Ryan,David L. Ederer,Hao Li +10 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a ferroelectric distortion at room temperature was observed in the near-edge spectra of thin films grown coherently on the Si(001) lattice, which is a direct consequence of the compressive biaxial strain achieved by coherent epitaxial growth.
