One or more of the light source (10) and the optional luminescent material (205) generate heat when the light source (10) generates light source light (11). The thermally variable reflecting element (60) is arranged downstream of the light source (10) and the optional luminescent material (205). The thermally variable reflecting element (60) has a first state wherein it is substantially reflecting and a second state wherein it is substantially transparent; heat induces a chance from the first state to the second state. The thermally variable reflecting element (60) is arranged to transmit at least part of one or more selected from the group consisting of the light source light (11) and optional luminescent material light (211) when being in the second state. The lighting device (100) is arranged to transport heat generated by one or more of the light source (10) and the optional luminescent material (205) to the thermally variable reflecting element (60).

A self-erasing writing system includes a writing surface structure, a writing instrument, and an erasing structure. The writing surface is preferably a laminate structure having a layer of a thermochromic material. The thermochromic material is of one color when within a certain temperature range (e.g. room temperature), but changes to a second color when the material is brought into a second temperature range (e.g. a lower temperature). The writing instrument is a temperature controlled cooled tip device that lowers the thermochromic material to within the second temperature range at the point of contact such that the points of contact become the second color. The thermochromic material has a "memory" that retains the second color until the temperature is raised to within a third temperature range at which time the thermochromic material changes back to its first color. The erasing structure is a heater either layered integral with the laminate structure or a separately applied heater as in the form of a conventional eraser. A thermal-optical converter which comprises an aqueous solution containing a non-ionic compound with a functional group, a closed vessel for containing the solution and a transparent window fitted to at least one part of the closed vessel which allows the solution to be visible. Because the aqueous solution is transparent at low temperatures and opaque at elevated temperatures, the thermal-optical converter can effect reversible optical changes in accordance with changes in the temperature of the solution.
