A system and method that facilitates planar processing of round earth data by employing a tiled projection is provided. The tiled projection is a two-step projection from the surface of the earth to a common plane that preserves polygons and polygonal paths. During the first step, the system performs a gnomonic projection to the facets of a circumscribed platonic solid, which maps spherical polygons to spatial polygons on the facets of the solid. During the second step, the system performs a polygon-preserving projection from the facets of the platonic solid to tiles in common plane. Thus, projections from multiple facets of the platonic solid on the common plane are processed by employing a planar algorithm.

According to the method, a projection cylinder, containing the globe ( 1 ) or secant to it, is defined, and the points on the globe, whose coordinates are defined by a longitude (φ) and a latitude (θ) are projected on to this cylinder by associating an abscissa (X) with each longitude (o) and an ordinate (Y), with each latitude (φ) with in a frame of reference of the developed cylinder ( 2 ), characterized in that: a sequence of n+1 angles of latitude (θ 0 , . . . , θ n ) is determined, defining n (n≧2) distinct ranges of latitude, each northern and/or southern hemisphere of the globe ( 1 ) is divided into n peripheral latitude zones ( 4 ) corresponding to the n ranges of the sequence, each being defined by two parallels ( 5, 6 ) of limit latitude, the parallels of limit latitude ( 5, 6 ) are projected on to the projection cylinder, and each point (A) of one of the n latitude zones ( 4 ) is projected into a point (A′) on the cylinder, whose ordinate is contained and interpolated between those of the projected parallels of limit latitude, according to the relative latitude (a) of the point (A) between the two parallels ( 5, 6 ).

The invention concerns a method for map projection of the earth globe (1) which consists in defining a projection cylinder, containing the globe (1) or intersecting therewith, and projecting the points of the globe, whereof the coordinates are defined by a longitude (ζ) and a latitude (υ), on said cylinder, by associating with each longitude (ζ) an abscissa (X), with each latitude (υ) a northing (Y), in a universal set of the developed cylinder (2). The invention is characterized in that it consists in determining a sequence or n+1 angles of latitudes (υ0, , υn), defining n (n≥2) distinct ranges of latitudes, dividing each North and/or South hemisphere of the globe (1) into n peripheral zones (4) of latitudes corresponding to the n ranges of the sequence, each defined by two limiting parallels of latitude (5, 6), projecting the limiting parallels of latitude (5, 6) on the projection cylinder and projecting each point (A) of the n zones (4) of latitudes in one point (A') of the northing cylinder included and interpolated between those of the projected limiting parallels of latitude, based on the relative latitude (υ) of the point (A) between the two parallels (5, 6). The invention provides a simple projection method without complex calculations.
