An instrumentation light probe holder for use in observing and measuring operating characteristics of rotating blades of a gas turbine engine during engine operation or rotating components of a machine during operation is disclosed. The holder includes an elongated cylindrical member for insertion into an opening or bore formed radially through an annular casing of the gas turbine engine or machine housing. The cylindrical member has a hollow interior for receipt of an instrumentation light probe and a first end for insertion into the casing or housing and for holding an operating end of the probe at a selected set-back distance from the rotating blades or components. A grasping mechanism is provided for releasably holding the light probe in the cylindrical member.

A seal prevents leakage of fluid between the seal and a moving surface. The seal includes a seal body and a conductor. The seal body can undergo wear to a specified depth before the seal requires replacement. The conductor is placed about the moving surface such that wear of the seal body to a specified depth brings the conductor into contact with the moving surface. The conductor may be embedded in the seal body to position the conductor about the moving surface. Wear of the seal body to a specified depth can be checked by checking electrical continuity of the conductor. The existence of electrical continuity between the conductor and the moving surface may indicate that the seal requires replacement. Alternatively, the conductor may be positioned such that the conductor has worn entirely through when the seal body has worn to a specified depth, with a loss of electrical continuity through the conductor indicating that the seal requires replacement.

A seal for preventing leakage of fluid from between a first member and a second member has a seal body and a seal wear indicator. The second member is capable of moving toward and away from the first member. The seal body is adapted for engaged contact with the first and second members so as to prevent leakage of fluid as long as the seal has not worn beyond a specified depth. A seal wear indicator is positioned within the seal body at approximately the specified depth, such that when the seal has worn to the specified depth, a change in the optical conductor is detected, indicating that the seal needs replacement.

An object comprising a body part having an electrically insulating outer surface part, and a first layer arranged on the outer surface part. The first layer is formed by one or more electrically conducting materials and defines one or more conducting paths between a first area of the outer surface part and a second area of the outer surface part. Thereby electrical signals may be transferred between the first and second area parts. The layer further defines a sensing device, which is thereby embedded into the object. The object is provided with a threaded portion defining an outer thread. Thereby the object may easily be fitted into an opening having a mating inner thread. The object may be in the form of an ordinary bolt with a sensing device embedded in a surface part thereof.

This invention relates to a method for measuring vibration in turbine blades and to an apparatus for mounting a sensing device for monitoring blade tip vibration in turbo-machinery. A guide tube is mounted through the cylinder covers of a turbine and extends to a position adjacent to the tip of the turbine blades. The guide tube is sealed at the cylinder covers and has a gate valve external of the turbine cylinder covers. A method for measuring vibration and turbine blades while the turbine is in full operation includes the steps of removing a dummy probe partially from the guide tube while the turbine is in operation. With the dummy probe still in a portion of the guide tube, the gate valve is closed. Once the gate valve is closed, the dummy sensor probe is completely removed from the guide tube and a vibration sensor probe is inserted into the guide tube opening, then the gate valve is opened for sliding the vibration sensor probe into the guide tube until a shoulder on the vibration sensor probe is positioned against an alignment shoulder at the end of the guide tube. The vibration sensor then measures vibrations of the turbine blades during the operation of the turbine.

A sensor probe is affixed at an end of a probe adapter which includes an extended portion which is radially flexible but torsionally stiff. A guideway which passes from an accessible location in a machine to the vicinity or the target surface guides the sensor probe to its operative location. Final positioning of the sensor probe is attained by abutment of a forward shoulder on the probe adapter with an abutment shoulder fixed to the machine a predetermined distance from the target surface to be monitored. This permits removal and replacement of sensor probes without requiring final adjustment of the replacement sensor probe. One embodiment of the invention permits final adjustment and locking of the sensor probe in position after full assembly of the bearing housing by providing a star wheel on an adjustment sleeve which, after adjustment is locked in position by a setscrew.
