Recent JT-60U results leading to high integrated performance are reported with emphasis on the projection to the reactor-relevant regime. Negative-ion-based neutral beam (NB) and electron cyclotron (EC) power increased up to 6.2 MW and 3 MW, respectively. A high βp H-mode plasma with full non-inductive current drive has been obtained at 1.8 MA, and the fusion triple product reached 3.1 × 1020 m−3 keV s. A high beta with βN = 2.7 was maintained for 7.4 s. Neoclassical tearing mode suppression with EC was accomplished using a real-time feedback control system, and improvement in βN was obtained. The stable existence of a current hole was observed. A high DT-equivalent fusion gain of 0.8 was maintained for 0.55 s in a plasma with a current hole. Current profile control in high bootstrap current reversed shear plasmas was demonstrated using N-NB and LH. A new operation scenario has been established in which a plasma with a high bootstrap current fraction and internal transport barriers (ITBs) is produced without the use of an OH coil. An ECCD study was undertaken in a reactor-relevant high Te regime. A new type of Alfven eigenmode mode has been proposed and has been found to explain the observed frequency chirp quite well. High confinement reversed shear plasmas with Te > Ti were obtained. Ar exhaust with EC heating was obtained in a high βp mode plasma. Impurity accumulation related to strong ITBs in a reversed shear plasma and degradation of ITB by ECH in a weak positive shear plasma have been found. Dedicated measurement of edge localized mode dynamics and scrape-off-layer plasma flow have advanced understanding of the physics. N-NB heating in an Ar-seed plasma extended the density region to 95% of the Greenwald density, with HHy2 = 0.9. Enhancement of pedestal pressure was obtained with an increase in βp in a high triangularity configuration.

The formation of electron internal transport barriers (ITBs) was studied using electron cyclotron (EC) heating in JT-60U positive shear (PS) and reversed shear (RS) plasmas with scan of neutral beam (NB) power. With no or low values of NB power and with a small radial electric field (Er) gradient, a strong, box-type electron ITB was formed in RS plasmas while a peaked profile with no strong electron ITBs was observed in PS plasmas within the available EC power. When the NB power and the Er gradient were increased, the electron transport in strong electron ITBs with EC heating in RS plasmas was not affected, while electron thermal diffusivity was reduced in conjunction with the reduction of ion thermal diffusivity, and strong electron and ion ITBs were formed in PS plasmas.

The excitation mechanism and stabilization of the observed m/n = 1/1 instability during the sawtooth ramp phase in the lower hybrid current driven plasmas on the HT-7 tokamak (Sun Y et al 2005 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 47 745–56) have been investigated in this paper. This mode is most likely destabilized by the current density gradient at the q = 1 surface. Based on the local transport model, it is shown that the saturation and stabilization of the m = 1 mode before the subsequent sawtooth crash may result from the flattening of the current profile because of the locally enhanced transport of the suprathermal electrons due to the magnetic island.

ECRF experiments in JT-60U have been started since 1999. ECRF system in JT-60U is characterized by a) collector potential depression (CPD) gyrotrons, b) two diamond windows at the gyrotron output and the vacuum vessel, c) a steerable mirror which enables to change a poloidal injection angle, d) two grooved polarizing mirrors which enable to change elliptical polarization of the incident wave, e) sixty-meter evacuated transmission line with corrugated waveguides. Duration and output power of the gyrotrons have been steadily increased, and ECRF of ∼1.5 MW was successfully injected to the torus for 3 seconds with 3 gyrotrons. By using the ECRF system, the following experimental results are obtained: a) An m/n=3/2 neoclassical tearing mode was completely stabilized by the fundamental ECH/ECCD. The optimum injection angle for the mode suppression was identified by scanning the injection angle during a discharge.
