A method of generating a keyboard switch haptic sensation in a coupled system comprising a touch-sensitive surface and a force exciter or actuator coupled to the touch-sensitive surface, the method comprising generating a carrier wave signal at frequencies within the frequency bandwidth of the coupled system, modulating the carrier wave signal with a modulation envelope so that the modulated carrier wave signal has a closely spaced pair of peaks, and driving the exciter or actuator with the modulated carrier wave signal to excite the touch-sensitive surface to provide a closely spaced pair of impulses whereby the keyboard switch haptic sensation is simulated to a user touching the touch-sensitive surface.

In response to detecting the end of the gesture: if intensity of the respective contact had reached a predefined intensity threshold prior to the end of the gesture, the device displays the second display state; otherwise, the device redisplays the first display state. After displaying an animated transition between a first display state and a second state, the device, optionally, detects an increase of the contact intensity. In response, the device displays a continuation of the animation in accordance with the increasing intensity of the respective contact.

This Haptic Projection System (HPS) synchronizes single impulses and vibrations transmitted through the surface material of the touch sensitive display. Impulse generators spaced equally around the edges of the screen can, by adjusting their relative intensities and timing, focus the impulses or vibrations to an approximate point, or series of points out on the screen surface. By focusing convergent haptic vibration patterns on the appropriate location, a sense of tactility, solidity, shape and even resistance and texture can be imbued in on-screen objects and controls being manipulated anywhere on the display surface.
