A fast and objective multidimensional kernel density estimation method
Travis A. O'Brien,Karthik Kashinath,Nicholas R. Cavanaugh,William D. Collins,John P. O'Brien +4 more
TL;DR: A multidimensional, fast, and robust kernel density estimation is proposed: fastKDE, which exhibits statistical accuracy that is comparable to state-of-the-science KDE methods publicly available in R, and it produces kernel density estimates several orders of magnitude faster.

Maximizing ENSO as a source of western US hydroclimate predictability
Christina M. Patricola,John P. O'Brien,John P. O'Brien,Mark D. Risser,Alan M. Rhoades,Travis A. O'Brien,Paul A. Ullrich,Dáithí Stone,William D. Collins,William D. Collins +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors used the ENSO Longitude Index (ELI) to measure the diversity of the spatial patterns of ENSOs' spatial patterns in a single metric, compared to the traditional Nino3.4 index.
Detection of atmospheric rivers with inline uncertainty quantification: TECA-BARD v1.0.1
Travis A. O'Brien,Travis A. O'Brien,Mark D. Risser,B. Loring,Abdelrahman Elbashandy,Harinarayan Krishnan,Jeffrey Johnson,Christina M. Patricola,John P. O'Brien,John P. O'Brien,Ankur Mahesh,Prabhat,Sarahí Arriaga Ramirez,Sarahí Arriaga Ramirez,Alan M. Rhoades,Alexander B. Charn,Alexander B. Charn,Héctor Inda Díaz,Héctor Inda Díaz,William D. Collins,William D. Collins +20 more
TL;DR: This work develops a large dataset of global AR counts, manually identified by a set of 8 researchers with expertise in atmospheric science, which is used to constrain parameters in a novel AR detection method, and applies the TECA Bayesian AR Detector, TECA-BARD v1.0, to the MERRA2 reanalysis and shows that the sign of the correlation between global AR count and El Nino Southern Oscillation depends on the set of parameters used.
Quantifying and Understanding Forced Changes to Unforced Modes of Atmospheric Circulation Variability over the North Pacific in a Coupled Model Large Ensemble
John P. O'Brien,Clara Deser +1 more
TL;DR: In this article , the authors investigated forced changes to unforced modes of wintertime atmospheric circulation variability and associated impacts on precipitation over the North Pacific and adjacent regions based on the 40-member Community Earth System Model version 1 Large Ensemble across the 1920-2100 period.

Quantifying the influence of natural climate variability on in situ measurements of seasonal total and extreme daily precipitation
Mark D. Risser,Michael Wehner,John P. O'Brien,John P. O'Brien,Christina M. Patricola,Christina M. Patricola,Travis A. O'Brien,Travis A. O'Brien,William D. Collins,Christopher J. Paciorek,Huanping Huang +10 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors introduce a single framework for characterizing the historical signal (anthropogenic forcing) and noise (natural variability) in seasonal mean and extreme precipitation in the United States.
