A flat, smooth material, e.g., metal sheet, suitable for use as a disc substrate for applying a recording media thereto for data storage devices, and a method of making same, are disclosed. The flat and smooth substrate is formed by applying sufficient pressure to opposite surfaces of the material to achieve the desired flatness and smoothness prior to finishing. Subsequent finishing may be used to remove any zone of roughness which may be present in the surfaces of the disc resulting from the pressing step. In one embodiment, the pressure step may be applied before finishing the disc perimeters.

Each of the material displacement edges are defined by a rake surface and a part interface surface that combine to form a positive rake angle. The strip is positioned between the top and bottom punches. The top and bottom punches then shear a portion of the upper and lower layers, respectively. More particularly, symmetrical groove patterns are formed in the upper and lower layers, defining a perimeter of the part. The part is then removed from the strip along the perimeter.

An automated transfer/injection process is defined that includes a charge forming unit, a shuttle unit, and a molding unit. The charge is formed from one or more slabs of reinforcing fibers and a resinous material. Once formed, the charge is preheated in the charge shuttle unit and is delivered to the molding unit, whereupon the preheated charges are forced by the pressure of a movable platform under vacuum into a mold cavity for polymerization. A method for preforming magnetic drum material involves the use of a hydraulic press and sleeve which in turn compresses the material and then cuts the material into a specific shape. This process is repeated until the material builds up in the sleeve to the required charge thickness.
