Articles to be sorted are loaded into
carriers (36) which move along a predetermined path that
has groups of receptacles (112,114,116,118,120,122,124,
126,128,130) under and adjacent to it. Each carrier
(36) has gates or doors (54) which are normally "closed"
to define a bottom that can hold an article within that
carrier (36), but which can be "opened" to release
that article for direct transfer into a selected one
of the receptacles (112,114,116,118,120,122,124,126,
128,130), all of which are positioned below the level
of that carrier (36). The gates or doors (54) of the
carriers (36) are arranged so they can selectively and
directly transfer articles into the centermost of a
group of transversely-positioned receptacles (112,114,
116,118,120,122,124,126,128,130), into the receptacle
(112,114,116,118,120,122,124,126,128,130) that is
disposed outwardly of that centermost receptacle (112,
114,116,118,120,122,124,126,128,130), or into the re
ceptacle (112,114,116,118,120,122,124,126,128,130) that
is disposed inwardly of that centermost receptacle (112,
114,116,118,120,122,124,126,128,130). As a result, the
direct transfer sorting system (20) of the present in
vention obviates the bulky and expensive chutes and
guides which have been required by prior sorting
systems.

Direct transfer sorting system

A tilting tray sorting system comprising a plurality of carriages, a track and a conveyor for moving the carriages along the track. Each carriage comprises a tray which is supported on its carriage for swiveling movement about a vertical axis and for tilting movement about a horizontal axis. The tray is normally held in generally horizontal position on the carriage. Actuators are provided along the path of the carriages and engage and move the trays such that they swivel about a vertical axis and tilt about a horizontal axis to deliver an article to one or more delivery positions along the path of the carriages. Reset devices are provided along the path of the carriages downstream of the delivery positions for returning the trays to their normal position.

Tilting tray sorting system

A system for sorting articles, the system having a track which defines a route starting at at least one loading point, the route continuing on to a plurality of destination points and arriving back at the loading point. The system also has at least one tray for conveying an article from the loading point to a selected one of the destination points. The track includes a first segment for momentarily tilting a leading end of the tray upward relative to a trailing end of the tray and possibly downward again, and a second segment for laterally tilting the tray at an angle. The first and second segments selectively maneuver an article loaded in the tray to a bottom corner thereof prior to the tray reaching the selected destination point in order to substantially reduce the jarring of the article during the discharge thereof at the selected destination point. A scanner is provided for scanning an identification-code disposed on the article. The scanner is coupled to a controller which determines the selected destination point using the information obtained by the scanner from the identification-code disposed on the article.

In a sorting system for flight luggage it it well known to put individual pieces of luggage in totes (4) which are entered onto a conveyor with sideways tiltable carrying platforms (2), whereby the pieces of luggage may be selectively unloaded from the totes at their destinations (D1,D2) or at a storage unit (W) where the totes are released and stored with their content for later re-introduciton into the sorting system. This known art has required a particular construction of the sorting conveyor with a large-angle tilt and a complex mechanism for releasibly holding the totes. According to the invention the totes have upper surfaces (8) which are of a concave shape in order that the pieces of goods may be slid off the totes while secured, at the same moderate angle required for the sliding-off at the storage unit. Hence the conveyor itself may be quite conventional, at the same time as the holding mechanism may be limited to mere retractable flanges (14) on the sides of the carrying platform.

Sorting and storage system for pieces of goods such as flight luggage

A tilting tray apparatus for use in a sorting conveyor includes a tray carrier and a yieldable spring latch for yieldably holding the carrier in an article carrying position, a bank position, and a discharge position. The latch yieldably resists tray carrier tilting to provide tray control. A tip-up cam surface is provided integrally on the tray carrier for engagement by a tip-up device to tilt the tray carrier to discharge articles thereon.
