A sheet processing apparatus, for example for flexographic printing and die-cutting of corrugated paperboard container blanks, has first and second successive processing sections connected by a transfer section. The sheets are successively passed through the various sections in positional registrations therewith. A sensor senses a sheet while in the transfer section and provides a signal representative of the positional registration of the sheet in the transfer section. A computer system determines from the signal whether the sheet would enter the second section in correct positional registration for processing by the second section, and adjusts as necessary the positional registration of the sheet while in the transfer section to cause the sheet to enter the second section in correct positional registration therewith. Preferably, the transfer section is a vacuum conveyor independently driven by one or more electric servo motors; the conveyor being both accelerated and decelerated to adjust sheet registration, and thereafter, the conveyor is returned to its original linear position without effecting the registrational position of the sheet.

Apparatus for folding blanks particularly those constructed from corrugated cardboard. As a blank advances along a paper line pathway, a first station engages the leading edges of the blank flaps and forces the flaps into an intermediate plane. A second station controls the relative velocity of the flaps along the paper line with respect to the panels to compensate for skew that can occur at other stations. A final station completes the folding operation. The second station includes driven rollers that engage opposite sides of each of the flaps. Independently controlled motors drive these rollers in response to the velocity of the blanks along a paper line pathway and any required offset for skew compensation. The controls can be remotely located from the station. Moreover, the station can accommodate blanks of different thicknesses, position the rollers at different locations on different flaps and accommodate cartons with different widths.

The inventive device (1; 1'; 1''; 1''') is provided with a processing cylinder (4) having at least one gripper (9) for register-controlled conveyance of the substrate (2).

A carton blank processing machine is disclosed having rolls for printing, cutting, creasing and otherwise processing carton blanks. The processing rolls are driven by shafts extending into bearings supported by spaced-apart frame members. At least one shaft extends through its associated bearing to the outboard side of the frame member and is surrounded by a motor, preferably of the frameless type, having a hollow rotor in which the shaft is received and connected for direct drive by the rotor. Axial adjustment systems are provided for axially adjusting at least one shaft and roll, and such systems may be mounted on the outboard end of the frameless motor.

The rotating printing machine comprises several printing stations in which the form cylinder (16) of each printing station (1,2,3) is driven directly by an asynchronous vectorial electric motor (26/36) controlled by an electronic circuit (101) for monitoring and control of the angular position (a1), at a command value (pLl, 2, 3(t)) that changes over time and is received from a central electronic calculating station (10) for the synchronization of stations with one another. More particularly, the cylinder/axle/rotor assembly (16/65/26) of at least one station can be moved in axial translation for the correction of the lateral registry of the form(s) of the cylinder. In addition, the machine comprises an arrangement (20-23) that reads registry marks (5) printed by each station, and establishes the possible lateral (dl1,2,3) and longitudinal (dL1,2,3) registry error for each station (1,2,3). Each lateral error (dl1,2.3) is then applied to the electronic control circuit (15) of an electric motor (25) of the corresponding station that controls, by means of a mechanism (35), the axial position of the rotor/axle/cylinder assembly (16/65/26). Each longitudinal registry error (dL1,2,3) is added directly to the cylinder position command (pL1,2,3(t)) of the corresponding station.

The D.C. motors control is achieved by the electrical shaft coupling driven by a driving device which comprises a command control unit having a code generator, a synchronization circuit for each motor and a curved generator for one of the motors, a calculating unit including a microprocessor, input/output circuits and an input circuit with switches, a signal conditioning unit with an element for sense discrimination and multiplication, and a signal conditioner, and a command logic unit including a logic drive selection circuit, a logic starting circuit and a logic manual command circuit.
