Leptin modulates the T-cell immune response and reverses starvation-induced immunosuppression
Graham M. Lord,Giuseppe Matarese,Jane K. Howard,Richard J. Baker,Stephen R. Bloom,Robert I. Lechler +5 more
TL;DR: It is reported here that leptin has a specific effect on T-lymphocyte responses, differentially regulating the proliferation of naive and memory T cells, and suggesting a new role for leptin in linking nutritional status to cognate cellular immune function.

Leptin protects mice from starvation-induced lymphoid atrophy and increases thymic cellularity in ob/ob mice
Jane K. Howard,Graham M. Lord,Giuseppe Matarese,Silvia Vendetti,Mohammad A. Ghatei,Mary A. Ritter,Robert I. Lechler,Stephen R. Bloom +7 more
TL;DR: Prevention of the fasting-induced fall in the level of the adipocyte-derived hormone leptin by administering exogenous recombinant leptin protected mice from these starvation-induced thymic changes, and reduced circulating leptin concentrations are pivotal in the pathogenesis of starvation- induced lymphoid atrophy.
Enhanced leptin sensitivity and attenuation of diet-induced obesity in mice with haploinsufficiency of Socs3
Jane K. Howard,Belinda J Cave,Laura J Oksanen,Laura J Oksanen,Iphigenia Tzameli,Christian Bjørbæk,Jeffrey S. Flier +6 more
TL;DR: It is reported here that Socs3+/− mice display greater leptin sensitivity than wild-type control mice and are significantly protected against the development of diet-induced obesity and associated metabolic complications.

Requirement for Leptin in the Induction and Progression of Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis
Giuseppe Matarese,Antonio Di Giacomo,Veronica Sanna,Graham M. Lord,Jane K. Howard,Antonino Di Tuoro,Stephen R. Bloom,Robert I. Lechler,Serafino Zappacosta,Silvia Fontana +9 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that leptin is required for the induction and maintenance of an effective proinflammatory immune response in the CNS and may provide a key link between nutritional deficiency and immune dysfunction.

The Transcription Factor T-bet Regulates Intestinal Inflammation Mediated by Interleukin-7 Receptor+ Innate Lymphoid Cells
Nick Powell,Nick Powell,Nick Powell,Alan W. Walker,Emilie Stolarczyk,James B. Canavan,James B. Canavan,James B. Canavan,M. Refik Gökmen,Ellen Marks,Ellen Marks,Ian Jackson,Ian Jackson,Ahmed Hashim,Michael A. Curtis,Richard G. Jenner,Jane K. Howard,Julian Parkhill,Thomas T. MacDonald,Graham M. Lord,Graham M. Lord +20 more
TL;DR: The mechanism by which T-bet regulates the complex interplay between mucosal dendritic cells, ILCs, and the intestinal microbiota is demonstrated, as well as Helicobacter typhlonius as a key disease trigger driving excess TNF-α production and promoting colitis in TRUC mice.
