There is provided a cellular antenna allowing mechanical azimuth adjustment in combination with adjustment of one or more other antenna attribute such as electrical down tilt, electrical beam width or electrical azimuth adjustment. An integrated control arrangement is provided which can utilise either serial, wireless or RF feed lines to convey communications. A multiband embodiment provides azimuth adjustment for both bands by utilising mechanical and electrical azimuth adjustment. Systems incorporating such antennas and methods of controlling them are also provided.

An improved base station which cancels the effects of known fixed interference sources produces a signal substantially free from the interference sources thereby increasing total channel capacity. The adaptive interference canceler system includes a main antenna for receiving signals from other communication stations and at least one directional antenna directed toward an interference source. The main and directional antennas are coupled to the adaptive canceler, which weights signals received by the directional antennas and sums the weighted signals to produce a cancellation signal. The adaptive canceler subtracts the cancellation signal from the signals received by the main antenna to provide an output signal substantially free from the interference generated by the one or more known interference sources.

The method comprises receiving a first multi-band RF signal from a first communications medium, the first multi-band RF signal including a first RF frequency band and one or more additional RF frequency bands; separating the first RF frequency band from the multi-band RF signal; varying a power level of the first RF frequency band; recombining the first RF frequency band with the one or more additional RF frequency bands into a second multi-band RF signal; and transmitting the second multi-band RF signal on a second communications medium.

A phase shifter adjusts the phase between two segments of an RF feed line that are fed with the phase shifter. Specifically, the phase shifter adjusts the phase between two signals in RF feed line segments by changing the electrical path lengths that RF energy travels down in each respective RF feed line. The phase shifter includes a coupling arm, a key, a spring, and a support architecture that fastens the phase shifter to a substantially planar surface. The support architecture is rotated manually or with a machine such as a motor. The coupling arm can include a coupling ring, a wiper element, a support trace, and a dielectric spacer. The phase shifting system is a relatively compact structure having a predetermined value of capacitance maintained between a coupling ring disposed on the coupling arm and a coupling ring disposed on a planar surface.

A base station antenna system producing a beam, includes an array antenna rotatably mounted with respect to an antenna support so as to permit azimuth steering of the antenna beam and an azimuth position rotation arrangement configured to rotate the array antenna with respect to the antenna support about an antenna axis. The rotation arrangement further includes an actuator mounted on the antenna support having an operator adapted to move linearly along an operator motion axis parallel to the antenna axis when the actuator is energized. A motion converter is coupled between the actuator and the array antenna, wherein linear movement of the operator along said operator motion axis produces rotary movement of the antenna about the parallel antenna axis.

An antenna, forming a part of an antenna system, is suitable for use on a communication satellite encircling the earth, and has a reflector illuminated by a set of feed elements wherein one of the feed elements generates a primary beam. The reflector is shaped to establish a specific configuration of the beam, and, upon illumination of the earth, there results a specific shape to the beam footprint. A mechanical positioning device connects the antenna with a body of the spacecraft for adjusting an orientation of the feed antenna and its beam relative to the body of the spacecraft. Control circuitry for adjustment of signal strengths and phase shifts of signals sent to respective ones of the feeds is accomplished by electronic circuitry including a memory which stores coefficients employed in the operation of variable power dividers and variable phase shifters of a feed network supplying electromagnetic signals to the feed. The memory is addressed to provide a desired correction to beam configuration corresponding to a specific orientation of the antenna.
