System and method for simultaneous media presentation

A method and apparatus for providing a virtual video on demand services is disclosed. The method and apparatus disclose the storing of a segment of the video program in advance for VOD viewing at a later time. When the subscriber selects VOD service, a pre-stored video segment is retrieved for presentation to the subscriber. Remaining video program segments simultaneously broadcast on a plurality of channels are recorded in parallel while the pre-stored video program segment is retrieved and presented to the user.

One embodiment of a multimedia file in accordance with the present invention includes a series of encoded video frames, a first index that includes information indicative of the location within the file and characteristics of each encoded video frame and a separate second index that includes information indicative of the location within the file of a subset of the encoded video frames.

In preferred embodiments, a system including a transmitter, a receiver, and a serial link, in which the transmitter is configured to transmit video data, embedded-clock auxiliary data (or auxiliary data derived from embedded-clock auxiliary data), and a video clock over the link to the receiver. In some embodiments, the invention is a personal digital network (“PDN”) including hardware (sometimes referred to as Ingress circuitry) configured to transcrypt encrypted content that enters the PDN. Typically, the transcryption (decryption followed by re-encryption) is performed in hardware within the Ingress circuitry and the re-encryption occurs before the decrypted content is accessible by hardware or software external to the Ingress circuitry. Typically, transcrypted content that leaves the Ingress circuitry remains in re-encrypted form within the PDN whenever it is transferred between integrated circuits or is otherwise easily accessible by software, until it is decrypted within hardware (sometimes referred to as Egress circuitry) for display or playback or output from the PDN. Typically, the PDN is implemented so that no secret in Ingress or Egress circuitry (for use or transfer by the Ingress or Egress circuitry) is accessible in unencrypted form to software or firmware within the PDN or to any entity external to the PDN. Other aspects of the invention are methods for protecting content in a PDN (e.g., an open computing system) and devices (e.g., multimedia graphics cards, set top boxes, or video processors) for use in a PDN.

Method and apparatus for content protection in a personal digital network environment

A communication system including a transmitter (1’), a receiver (2’), and a serial link, in transmitted from the transmitter to the receiver. The serial link can but need not be a TMDS or TMDS-like link. In typical embodiments, packets of encoded audio data are transmitted over each of one of more channels of the link during data islands between bursts of encoded video data. Other aspects of the invention are transmitters for use in encoding data for transmission over a serial link, receivers for receiving such data, and methods for sending encoded data over a serial link.

A communication system including a transmitter, a receiver, and a TMDS-like link, in which video data and auxiliary data are transmitted from the transmitter to the receiver, or in which video data are transmitted over the link from the transmitter to the receiver and auxiliary data are transmitted from the receiver to the transmitter (or from the transmitter to the receiver and also from receiver to the transmitter), a transmitter or receiver for use in such a system, and methods for sending auxiliary data and video data over such a link, synchronizing such auxiliary data with such video data, and generating clocks having frequency closely matching the rate at which the auxiliary data are transmitted. Typically, the auxiliary data include one or more streams of audio data. In some embodiments the transmitter transmits a video clock to the receiver over a video clock channel, at least one of the transmitter and receiver transmits at least one stream of auxiliary data to the other one of the transmitter and the receiver, and at least one of the transmitter and the receiver transmits over the video clock channel at least one auxiliary clock for the auxiliary data.

Method and apparatus for synchronizing auxiliary data and video data transmitted over a TMDS-like link

A communication system including a transmitter, a receiver, and a TMDS-like link, in which video data and auxiliary data (typically including timing data associated with other auxiliary data) are transmitted from the transmitter to the receiver, or in which video data are transmitted over the link from the transmitter to the receiver, and auxiliary data (typically including timing data associated with other auxiliary data) are transmitted from the receiver to the transmitter. In typical embodiments the auxiliary data include one or more streams of audio data. Other aspects are transmitters and receivers for use in such a system, methods for sending auxiliary data and video data over a TMDS-like link, methods for transmitting and recovering clocks for auxiliary data transmitted over such a link, methods for synchronizing auxiliary data transmitted over such a link with video data transmitted over such a link, and methods for generating clocks having frequency closely matching the rate at which the auxiliary data are transmitted over such a link.

Method and apparatus for sending auxiliary data on a TMDS-like link

A method, apparatus and system for pre-authenticating ports is disclosed. In one embodiment, an active port facilitating communication of media content between a transmitting device and a receiving device is identified, while the active port are associated with a first High-Definition Content Protection (HDCP) engine. Then, inactive ports that are in idle mode serving as backup ports to the active port are identified, while the inactive ports are associated with a second HDCP engine. Pre-authentication of each of the inactive ports is performed so the pre-authenticated inactive ports can subsequently replace the active port if a port switch is performed.
