In a previous paper, referred to as a ``Mini-Landscape'' search, we explored a ``fertile patch'' of the heterotic landscape based on a ${\mathbb{Z}}_{6}\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{II}$ orbifold with SO(10) and ${\mathrm{E}}_{6}$ local grand unified theory structures. In the present paper we extend this analysis. We find many models with the minimal supersymmetric standard model spectra and an exact $R$ parity. In all of these models, the vectorlike exotics decouple along $D$-flat directions. We present two benchmark models which satisfy many of the constraints of a realistic supersymmetric model, including nontrivial Yukawa matrices for three families of quarks and leptons and Majorana masses for right-handed neutrinos with nontrivial seesaw masses for the three light neutrinos. In an appendix we comment on the important issue of string selection rules and, in particular, the so-called ``gamma-rule''.

Heterotic road to the MSSM with R parity

Orbifold compactification of heterotic E{sub 8}xE{sub 8}{sup '} string theory is a source for promising grand unified model building. It can accommodate the successful aspects of grand unification while avoiding problems like doublet-triplet splitting in the Higgs sector. Many of the phenomenological properties of the four-dimensional effective theory find an explanation through the geometry of compact space and the location of matter and Higgs fields. These geometrical properties can be used as a guideline for realistic model building.

We discuss heterotic strings on 2 × 2 orbifolds of non factorisable six-tori. Although the number of fixed tori is reduced as compared to the factorisable case, Wilson lines are still needed for the construction of three generation models. An essential new feature is the straightforward appearance of three generation models with one generation per twisted sector. We illustrate our general arguments for the occurrence of that property by an explicit example. Our findings give further support for the conjecture that four dimensional heterotic strings formulated at the free fermionic point are related to 2 × 2 orbifolds.

Z(2)x Z(2)heterotic orbifold models of non factorisable six dimensional toroidal manifolds

Three generation heterotic string vacua in the free fermionic formulation gave rise to models with solely the MSSM states in the observable standard model charged sector. The relation of these models to Z2×Z2 orbifold compactifications dictates that they produce three pairs of untwisted Higgs multiplets. The reduction to one pair relies on the analysis of supersymmetric flat directions, which give a superheavy mass to the dispensable Higgs states. We explore the removal of the extra Higgs representations by using the free fermion boundary conditions, and hence we work directly at the string level, rather than in the effective low energy field theory. We present a general mechanism that achieves this reduction by using asymmetric boundary conditions between the left- and right-moving internal fermions. We incorporate this mechanism in explicit string models containing three twisted generations and a single untwisted Higgs doublet pair. We further demonstrate that an additional effect of the asymmetric boundary conditions is to substantially reduce the supersymmetric moduli space.
