Culture and Imperialism

Throughout the world, political mobilizations by refugees, irregularized migrants, and solidarity activists have emerged, demanding and enacting the right to move and to stay, struggling for citizenship and human rights, and protesting the violence and deadliness of contemporary border regimes. Introduction: The Contentious Politics of Refugee and Migrant Protest and Solidarity Movements: Remaking Citizenship from the Margins

Solidarity. Hidden Histories and Geographies of Internationalism

Players and Arenas: The Interactive Dynamics of Protest is an important milestone for the ongoing interactionist insurgency in social movement studies. The contributors were all invited to weigh the prospects of a Strategic Interaction approach to contentious politics. Not all of the theorists included here, many eminent scholars among them, sign on to the full proposal, but the differences between them are quite constructive and enjoyable to discover in the course of reading this richly edited collection. Overall the level of joint attention paid to strengths of the strategic framework and sustained across cases is remarkable. The result is a coherent and creative book that suggests, performs, and tilts theoretical progress in social movement research in its desired microsociological direction. Outlines of the strategic perspective on protest bookend the volume, with James Jasper covering the introduction and Jan Willem Duyvendak and Olivier Fillieule following up with a hefty theoretical conclusion.
