Gas chromatographic and mass spectrometric analysis of polychlorinated biphenyls in human placenta and cord blood.
TL;DR: The results show that the placenta and cord blood are useful human samples to analyze the body burden of environmental pollutants and to estimate their transfer from mother to fetus.

Effects of volcanic activity on the mortality figures for respiratory diseases
TL;DR: It is considered possible that volcanic air pollution may have a causal association with the mortality figure for bronchitis but not with those for other respiratory diseases.

[Health effects of volcanic air pollution--an analysis of the national health insurance].
TL;DR: In the area exposed to volcanic air pollution, the seasonal variation in the number of monthly clinical consultations for respiratory problems is partly modified by the exposure levels of sulfur dioxide rather than total suspended particles, although no adjustments were made for climatologic factors.

Sensory irritation by sulfite aerosols on the upper respiratory tract in mice.
TL;DR: It is shown in mice that the sensory irritation action by sulfur dioxide was accompanied with a rapid decrease in respiratory rate followed by a gradual recovery toward pre-exposure level during continued exposure, and that sodium metabisulfite aerosol exerted a characteristic respiratory reaction similar to sulfur dioxide while sodium sulfites aerosol was inactive.
