A packer joint is provided for mounting on a vessel or pipeline entry valve which includes a stinger guide and an adjustable packer seal. A driving mechanism is mounted on the packer joint to which the stinger is connected for insertion through the packer joint into the vessel or pipe line. Improved clamping collets are mounted within the packer joint to retain the stinger in the desired position after insertion. A safety cap is provided for mounting on or around the packer joint and exposed end of the stinger after the stinger is inserted and the driving mechanism removed.

The mounting assembly (22) is attached to a surface of the pipe (14) adjacent an opening (44) in a side wall of the pipe (14) . The shedding bar (26) is inserted through the opening (44) and extends an entire diameter of the pipe (14). The shedding bar (26) is held in place by a compression force exerted by the sensor assembly (46) on a proximal end of the shedding bar (26), such that the shedding bar (26) is held by the compressive force between the sensor assembly (46) and an opposing side wall of the pipe (14). The sensor assembly (46) is adapted to measure motion of a pivoting element (28) corresponding to vortices in the process fluid caused by the shedding bar (26). The sensor assembly (46) is adapted to produce an output indicative of the volumetric flow rate based on the frequency of the measured motion.

A manipulator for a fiberscope probe or other inspection probe includes a fixed base 20 and a chassis 96 rotating on a hollow spindle 70 relative to the base. The chassis, spindle and an internal housing 66 rotate together with a translative motor 60 for powering a friction drive and the rotation providing motor 100. The friction drive wheels 26 and 28 oppose idlers 30 and 32 which are movable by means of a tensioner 74 to increase the friction of the drive mechanism. The friction drive wheels extend into a central passage 12 through which the probe passes to drive the probe. The rotation motor acts with a gear fixed relative to base 20 and is controlled through limit switches 122 and 124 for 400° of rotation. A potentiometer 130 monitors rotational positions. An encoder 140, driven by an idler to eliminate slippage, monitors the friction drive of the probe.

Inspection probe manipulator

A tool adapted for inserting and removing pitot tubes or other sensing elements through a hot tap into a fluid conveying pipeline is mounted to the side of the hot tap. A drive tube is slidably inserted into a protective enclosing tube, with the enclosing tube being attached to the hot tap and the drive tube being attached to the sensing element. Rotation of a threaded drive shaft causes a threaded bushing connected to the drive tube to move upward and downward within the enclosing tube depending on the direction of rotation. Downward movement of the drive tube inserts the sensing element into the pipeline through the hot tap and upward movement of the drive tube removes the sensing element from the hot tap.

This invention relates to a manually-operated mechanism for inserting and removing flow measurement probes and the like from a pipeline carrying a flowing fluid, such mechanism being characterized by a hanger subassembly including a yoke mounted atop the probe for movement therewith externally of the pipe along with a pair of threaded rods suspended non-rotatably from the yoke and which parallel one another as well as the longitudinal axis of the probe but on opposite sides thereof, a drive subassembly supported in fixed position beneath the yoke and including a common drive shaft along with a pair of worm gear trains each containing a worm gear threaded onto one of the threaded rods, such drive subassembly operatively interconnecting the shaft and the two threaded rods for simultaneously and synchronously raising or lowering the latter, and a handcrank for turning the drive shaft.
