A combination of a precision analog-to-digital converter (ADC), an analog amplifier having selectable gains and an intelligent controller to coordinate the amplifier gain selection and placement of the digital conversion results into at least one register provide for a very high resolution analog-to-digital conversion process, at a high sample rate and low power consumption. For example, a 14-bit ADC may be used with selectable gain analog amplification, e.g., ×1, ×2, ×4 and ×8, between the sampled signal and ADC input and an intelligent controller to provide a 17-bit conversion number having proper scaling of the digital sample words. The entire high resolution analog-to-digital conversion process may be automatically performed without additional control from external hardware/software.

The improved technique advantageously allows the delta sigma modulator to handle overload gracefully without reset, and offers greater dynamic range at reduced resolution. Furthermore, the coefficient(s) of the delta sigma modulator can be adjusted in such a way to ensure the noise transfer function is not affected.

The DRE circuit is coupled to the delta-sigma modulator output and to the PGA. The DRE circuit is configured to monitor a signal level of the delta-sigma modulator output. Responsive to the signal level being less than a DRE threshold, the DRE circuit is configured to program the PGA for a gain level greater than unity gain and to cause the digital filter to implement an attenuation of a same magnitude as the gain level to be programmed into the PGA.

The LSB path comprises a second delta-sigma modulator comprising a loop filter and a quantizer. The quantizer may have an input coupled to the loop filter and to the digital filter. The LSB path may further include a second digital-to-analog converter coupled to an output of the quantizer. The circuit may further include a digital filter and/or a gain stage interposed between the MSB path and the LSB path.
